I like to get the underlying cause treated when it's not viral. I didn't know that about fevers until Chloe had one (hers was 105.5) and the ER doctor told us the same thing- that your brain shuts off as a defense mechanism so there's really no such thing as a too high fever, and it's the symptoms that tell you there's a problem and not the numbers. Everytime I've had a fever over 101-102, I've had either strep, the flu, or mastitis. People fear fevers, but it's more about how the rest of you is feeling. I had 105.5 when I had flu as a resident and I felt so bad that I couldn't have gotten to a doctor if I tried. And I lived in a mountain town with no good health care.
