@MamaT: I was wondering if the lanolin in Aquaphor might be bothering him, which is why we've been using Vaseline instead. I'm allergic to Aquaphor, so I knew it was a possibility!

@MamaG: He had some sort of virus. We now have a prescription cream for the worst of his eczema and it's really helping. Plus steroids! He's doing a lot better now. :D

@Adira: :( poor little man! I was going to say that Charlie tends to get worse eczema when he is sick, dialysis is wonky, teeth, or anything that is making his body stressed. I swear by hydrocortisone and the Eucerin eczema cream for him, plus some diaper rash cream in his creases.

Just FYI- my sons allergist told me I made his eczema worse by slathering him in Aquaphor. Apparently his allergies are exacerbated by the lanolin in Aquaphor. I know you said you tried the Vaseline, and it got worse (perhaps also the fever ☹️). We use the Vanicream bar soap, then Vanicream lotion, then Vaseline and cold compress. I hope he feels better soon!

Our derm has recommended the same for DS's eczema.
Also, I had pretty nasty atopic eczema growing up and finally outgrew it towards the end of high school. Looks like my boys will have it too.

@Adira: Last year my son had a rash (for lack of a better word) so terribly that it did not look like his typical eczema and it looked like his skin was burned. Turned out he had hand foot and mouth and an ear infection that never cleared from the pneumonia and bronchiolitis he had 2 weeks prior.

I notice that my son's eczema flares always get worse when he is sick.

Hope you figure out what it is and your LO feels better real soon!

@Adira: I can't find our tub, but I doubt it has petroleum in it. It's a white creamy lotion, as opposed to a thicker jelly.

My allergist told us that eczema almost always has an allergy component. For DS it's dairy. Once he was dairy free, no more eczema. In the meantime, we did vanicream twice daily - once with a soak

@sandy: I'm just so surprised that he would have issues with Vaseline since it's just petroleum jelly... which is so gentle on the skin. I've never heard of people having issues with it, which is why we've been using it lately instead of Aquaphor. Ugh!

@charlotte: @ValentineMommy: Does the vanicream ointment not have petroleum jelly (in case that's the issue)?

@charlotte: Yep - out of bath, pat dry, apply ointment, and then put him in long pants/sleeves PJs. As for getting hot and sweaty, I'm honestly not sure - I haven't noticed him waking up seeming hot, and his room is usually the coolest in the house, so I think he's okay, temperature-wise... We actually had some Mometasone that was prescribed to my other LO and I used it on him and it really does make a world of difference, but we don't have a prescription for him and we're just about out... he has a dermatology appointment on Tuesday, so I'm hoping we can get him his own prescription!

@rachiecakes: Thanks! Xander had eczema as a baby, so we're already in the habit of using very gentle products, no fragrances, etc.

@rachiecakes: me too! My face reacts to everything - even stuff that is targeted for sensitive skin. I can't do all the magical creams and other anti-aging products that others use. I can't even use most make up products without my face eventually reacting. I definitely think it's detox/build up issue. I can use pretty much anything once or twice as long as it's not super harsh but any regular or even semi-regular use and my skin will react badly. Then I have to use prescription strength hydrocortisone to treat the reaction and let my skin heal. I only use Cetaphil face wash and Cetaphil lotion bc it's the mildest stuff that my face doesn't react to

Both my boys have bad eczema, and the only thing that helped them was Vanicream. DS1 had a patch on his shoulder that would disappear with steroids, then the second we stopped them, it would come back. We fought it for 2 years. Used Vanicream for a few days, and it's never come back! I swear by it!

Not my LO, but I have pretty sensitive skin and tend to get weird rashes, dry patches, reactions from products. My best friend, who has a LO with eczema and allergies, suggested I detox my products. There are so many chemicals in products like moisturizer, bubble bath, etc., even the ones that say for sensitive skin.
I stripped everything down and started using only unscented castile soap (Dr.Bronners) and coconut oil. My skin has never been better!

@sandy: hydrocortisone works for the patches I get on my face and I'm sensitive to everything especially on my face neck and chest.

Poor guy. I hate when we get in one of these little phases where we do everything and it won't go away. Our allergist recommends Vanicream lotion after the soak and seal and we use Mometasone (prescription steroid) on the really bad spots in the summer. Two questions that seem to contradict one another (ha): are you putting on tight pjs right after the bath and lotion to seal in the moisture (long sleeves and pants)? And separately- is there a chances he's getting hot and sweating? That seems to make it worse for our little guy.

In summary, our summer recipe for success is : way too much air conditioning. Soak and seal w vanicream. Long sleeve pjs and pants.

I hope it gets better !

I think it is possible that he is sensitive/reactive to the Vaseline. I'm reactive to so many lotions and ointments that should be neutral but cause my skin to react

I have eczema and hydrocortisone cream works best for me. I believe they make hydrocortisone lotion. And I think others have had luck with Aveeno lotion for eczema. Good luck!

So Logan has eczema and lately it's been really bad. We've always used Aquaphor on his trouble spots, or a prescription ointment, but it never seems to help. Recently, at his allergy appointment, his allergist discussed his eczema with us and suggested a daily soak and set, where we give him a bath (not necessarily with soap) every day and then immediately lather him in vaseline or similar right after. We've been doing that for a couple days now, and if anything, his eczema seems worse!

Anyone deal with this or have any ideas what's going on? Vaseline is a pretty neutral thing... is it possible he's allergic?? Or is this the kind of thing where he's going to look worse before it gets better??
