@mamimami: In reality those bears had a bunch of issues. There is not a childhood problem they didn't struggle with. I'm judging them a little scrolling through their titles. Sounds like Sister and Brother were trouble makers.

Some books I found:
The Longest Christmas List Ever
Being Thankful (Little Critter book)

@looch: I had a similar situation with my son recently and we did the whole list routine first, and then after I read him the list back... then we bought the one item we needed (a gift). I was expecting the worst case scenario, but it worked out that day!

@mrbee: I am willing to try it, but what would you have done in the situation with the helmet? I normally would have just ordered on line, but I needed to see if it fit...i do suppose I could have chose a store that didn't have toys, but my son is like a bloodhound and can find toys everywhere, lol.

@looch: I read about a strategy that works for toy stores, and to my surprise it actually worked on my kids! Before we go into the store, I tell them we won't be buying anything today but that they should make sure and tell me everything that they want and I will write it down and make sure to remember it. I make a big production out of writing everything down and then when they're done, I read the list back to them. So far, a 100% success rate! I think it works because most of all, they just want to know that someone is listening to them.

I just got this book a friend recommended called Sometimes You Get What You Want: http://www.amazon.com/Sometimes-You-Get-What-Want/dp/0061140155

We've only read it a couple times since it just recently arrived but I've already started incorporating it into our everyday lives, around presents and buying stuff but also food, brushing teeth, bedtime, etc. Worth a shot maybe? My LO is 2 so I can imagine this will get harder with time.

I realize this sounds pathetic, but I remember when I was little my parents reading me "The Berenstain Bears Get the Gimmies." It obviously stuck with me, haha. I'll research some other books for you!

@mamimami: yeah, my son is even asking for stuff when we go to the store...we tried to go to the store yesterday to buy a helmet so he could ride his new scooter, he tried to negotiate a different gift instead of the helmet!
I was caught off guard, he agreed in the car only the helmet, but all bets were off when we got into the store.

I honestly don't know what to do differently....we went together to make a gingerbread house, we've decorated our house, we've made gifts for other people.....it has to be the age. Someone tell us it is the age!

@looch: oh man, it is sooooooo bad. I tried to distract him by telling him we would make a gingerbread house and he just flipped out when I told him he couldn't eat it ASAP. He is also 4. I hope this will pass!!

We are in the exact same boat (birthday is 16th, turned 4).

It's horrible and the behaviour going on in my house is really upsetting. Problem is that he literally gets no other gifts for the rest of the year, and I can't just hold onto gifts and give them to him later. He knows when his birthday is.

My son's birthday was yesterday and of course Christmas is almost here. Between his party a couple weeks ago, his actual birthday yesterday and Christmas coming, he has become a raging psycho present monster! Yesterday in the car he started crying because he wanted "more! Presents!" And today when I got back from Christmas shopping he pitched a fit when I wouldn't give him his presents. I have tried everything from talking about Jesus to people who have no presents to threatening to give away his presents and the only thing that halfway worked was talking about how awesome it is to GIVE gifts instead of just getting them.

Long story short, are we the only ones? We definitely don't go crazy with gifts -- we don't even do Santa. Is there an episode of Daniel Tiger or some other didactic show that will help explain this better than I?
