We let the grandparents choose their names, even ones we don't agree with (like my mom wanting Nonna when Step-MIL wants Nana). I wish my parents would've been Mimi & Poppop, but I don't think it's my call. Your LO won't be confused about who Mom & Dad are, regardless of of similar grandparent names are.

As a side note, I really don't understand when people say the grandchildren decide grandparent names. I learned my grandparent's "nicknames" from my parents & that's what I called them. I get that young children have trouble with pronouncing certain words, but I wouldn't let my LO grow up forever calling a dog a "dah". I'm going to teach him all sorts of words, so why wouldn't I teach him grandparent names?

My mom picked a silly name, but it's going to be a LONG time before they get called it. IMO, it's not worth it. They want to be called something silly, they get that right.

Totally agree that our kid will have last say, it's just hard cause they've started calling themselves that.

I had an Abuela and an Abuelo on my mom's side, and a Maw Maw and Paw Paw on my dad's. Both were based on cultural naming, so that's just what it was, but no one was interested when I suggested heritage based names.

Oh well, can't wait to see what LO picks ;)

I feel you. My in laws want to be Nana and Pops. Nana is fine, but I just can't handle "Pops". I find it ridiculous. I call them Grandma and Grandpa all the time to their faces, haha.
I know whatever my LO calls them will be their name, so I'm just going to wait it out.

no advice, but thought i'd share that in cantonese, the mother is "mama" and the paternal grandmother is "mahmah." we can hear the difference, but it probably sounds the same to other people.

what the kids call their mom and their grandma might sound similar, but it's not like anyone ever confuses the two.

In my husband's language there are distinct names for paternal and maternal grandparents (and aunts/uncles) to that cuts down on competition and confusion between the two.

The names for the paternal grandparents are daddah and dadah (I personally can't hear a difference between the two!) but DH didn't want to be called daddy/dada so it wasn't an issue. The maternal uncle is muma but I don't have brothers, so again we dodged the bullet :)

My mother in law insisted on being called a specific name once she found out we (me and SIL at same time) were pregnant. Now that the babies are here she has realized it didn't stick and even though we use the name, she never does. I say just appease her for the time being but don't buy any monogrammed sweatshirt ps just yet.

In my family the grandparents got decide what their grandkids call them, and if we didn't like it, we would be considered disrespectful. I think it's a cultural thing!

weird! i only had grandma/grandpa so i've never even thought about it. no advice - but it might be a tough battle if they persist and tell your kid(s) to call them those names when you're not there anyways. :(

I agree with Mr. Bee and Highwire, that it should be whatever your LO calls them. I'm going through the same thing right now, and my MIL even changed the name on her e-mail so it shows up as "Mom Mom." LO isn't even here yet and he will NOT be calling her mom mom!

I only ever grew up with "grandma" and "grandpa" (on both sides) so my in-laws obsession with this topic is strange to me.

Help! The in-laws have started making nickname requests and we kinda hate all of them. We don't want anything that sounds like mama, dada, or papa as those are names we like (DH likes both and wants dibs on both till the kid is here).
This will be the first grandchild on either side, so he's the trailblazer as far as names are concerned.

My parents are happy with Nana and Gramps, but his parents want names like Maymie and Poppa. His mom can be a little intense and easily offended, so we're trying to handle this delicately, but firmly.

Advice? Name suggestions? Would love to know how other people dealt with this situation.

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!
