Thank you so much! I would never have known to schedule an "interview" but I booked 2 (based on referrals/yelp) so we'll see how it goes. Thanks!

I was too nervous to do this but wish I had! I didn't know how to go about interviewing them and so I did a lot of online research, and phone calls. And so far I'm really happy with my decision!

I did! You don't make an appointment, you schedule an interview. Let them know when you call to schedule that you're trying to choose your provider. Go in with a list of questions and see how it feels! I interviewed two doctors and a midwifery before I found the doctor I decided to use. Definitely recommend doing this!

In my case all the reviews in the world didn't help me! It was just personal preference. There are a few practices in my area that everyone goes to. 99% of patients rave about them, but there are a few patients like me who want/need something different (more personalized/consistent care, alternative options) and never say anything online about them. What @LuLu Mom: said about getting opinions from people with similar values is important, I think.

@OMM4: I had intended to do this but had the same concerns about insurance. I was switching medical groups and needed to find a new obgyn. My insurance would not cover multiple visits to various OBGYNs. I did a lot of research online about various OBGYNs within my insurance coverage. I looked at yelp reviews and educational background. I got personal references where I could. I figured there were about three I was interested in who were covered by my insurance. (The two I like the most are not covered by insurance so I didn't consider them.) Ultimately, the first OBGYN I went to (for annual well woman and preconception) I ended up really loving. If I would have had to go to other doctors to check them out, I would have just paid out of pocket.

I would think that they would be too busy for a meet and greet? I think word of mouth is the best way to go! Getting other women's opinions, especially those with similar values/likes as you would be the best place to start.

I didn't and wish I had. I never really LOVED my ob and he totally gave me a meltdown right before delivering. SO grateful his partner ended up being my delivery doctor!

I would think most OBs are too busy to meet and smooze with patients that may or may not pick them. i'd ask a friend for a recommendation, honestly!

I dunno, my OB is packed! And I think that's a good sign :)

Like you, I read about this but didn't know exactly how to do about doing it. I just ended up picking one and initially I wasn't very happy with my choice. My last appointment went better so I think I will stick with them, but I really wish that I felt 100% comfortable with my practice. One thing to keep in mind is that you might agree with the overall philosophy of the practice or get along well with some of the doctors and/or midwives, but that you will likely be seeing different doctors and/or midwives throughout your treatment and you will probably like some better than others.

Sort of...I went to a couple OBs for preconception appointments to get a feel for the practice. When I actually got pregnant I went with another practice, and after a couple appointments (I needed 3 in a very short time) I realized I wanted someone else and switched right away. Insurance had no problem with all the switching.

I have sort of done this. I had a practice I liked but they were too far and my gyn doesn't deliver anymore. I called a practice I wanted to check out and they have me a 30 minute meet and greet appointment, the receptionist didn't seem at all surprised when I called and asked if it would be possible to sit down with someone to learn more about the practice and see if I wanted to use them. We couldn't stand that practice though so I just went ahead and made an appointment with another practice for an official first visit. I had talked with my insurance before and they said they strongly encourage second opinions and that if for any reason something were rejected to just call in and they would fix it.

I've heard of OB "speed dating" events, but never facilitating something like this on your own. Seems like too much of a hassle! I checked out Yelp and asked my Naturopath (who saw me at 4w and to get pregnant).

Hi! Did anyone here meet with multiple OBs before deciding who to go with? I've seen advice online suggesting that as a way to find a dr you're comfortable with, but I'm wondering how that works for insurance purposes. I can't imagine my insurance company would pay for multiple first appointments. Any advice would be appreciated!
