I don't know if you want to give this a try. My lo had a severe diaper rash from diarrhea and nothing seemed to work.

I found that even the most sensitive wipes makes the rash worst so instead, I just rinse and him off with warm water every time he is wet and has a bm. Make sure he is pat and fully dry before putting diaper cream on (triple paste worked on my son's bottom). We saw a drastic change in 3 days and his rash was gone by the end of the week.

I continue to do this and he has been rash free since.

I hope things get better for your lo.

My boys went through a recent tough patch of diaper rash after antibiotics. I gave them probiotics, culturelle. They would scream when it was time to change their diapers and the only thing that helped was wiping with tissues that I had put pepto on. I would pour some pepto on the tissues and then wipe them. It was messy but at least they screamed less. I also used caldesene powder it's zinc oxide and talc and helped keep things dry. Good Luck!

Thanks again everyone. We got through the night and her first diaper change of the day didn't involve any tears.

Our new added problem is soaking her crib. Diapers are maybe less absorbent with the creams?

Oh, I feel for you. It's so hard when they have diarrhea because the rash just isn't gonna get better until the diarrhea clears up. We went through the same thing when LO was on antibiotics a few weeks ago. We did all of what you listed, plus gave 2 baths a day with several tablespoons of baking soda in the water. No soap. And just let her bottom air dry afterwards. We like Butt Paste. Desitin is too hard to wipe off --> more pain.

@MamaG: NP. I was glad when another mom told me b/c I almost tried it and sheesh I would've hated to make it worse!

We also did baking soda soaks which REALLY helped and I used a blow dryer on low during diaper changes to help get P totally totally dry before putting anything on her bum.

Butt paste made WJ's diaper rash worse :( Triple Paste worked the best for us.

The only real thing that can keep the rash at bay until the diarrhea is gone is keeping it DRY DRY DRY. This means as much diaper-free time as possible and if you HAVE to put a diaper on them, make sure the skin is BONE dry before applying clotrimazole (same as lotrimin, kills yeast), then a thick layer of any cream with zinc oxide (triple paste works best for us) and then the diaper.

So sorry, seeing them in so much pain is so so sad :(

@MamaG: (tmi) the only reason I know is because I had a horrible yeast infection when I was in high school (from antibiotics), which resulted in the rash, and ibuprofen was the only relief I got until the Diflucan kicked in after 2 days.

If your LO wakes up tonight and seems like she's in pain, I would try to give her some.

Poor baby - hope she feels better soon!

1. STOP using the cornstarch!!!! Yeast feeds on it so everything else you're doing right is basically tossed out the window!

2. The yogurt is great to help get the yeast under control faster!

3. P had a yeast rash at just a few days old and it took forever to get it completely healed. We ultimately had to make our own diaper rash cream to cover all our "needs"

We used a cream that was equal parts of:
-Lotrimin/or generic for the yeast but the Nystatin should work great.
-Aquaphor as a skin protectant/sealant
-Neosporin to help heal any sores
Then add Maloxx until you get the consistency you want to help the aciditiy

It worked really well! I've also made one of coconut oil w/ tea tree oil that has healed her bum up really well too & is CD safe so is a big plus for us! I hope her bum gets better soon!

Good to know @BabyBoecksMom. I seriously considered ibuprofen tonight when she was squirming in pain. I think tomorrow I will give her some a bit before the diaper change to start with so that just maybe she will be a bit more calm.

I just wasn't sure if it would help at all since it seems like the pain would be more like a burning pain.

@MamaG: I also highly recommend giving her some ibuprofen to help with the swelling and pain until it starts easing up. Tylenol doesn't seem to touch it.

TMI, but for my own yeast issues, tea tree oil soap has been a life-changer. Perhaps they make baby-friendly products with tea tree oil, yeast's natural enemy.

@BabyBoecksMom: That's exactly what the nurse thought, yeast infection. She recommended monistat. We have prescription Nystatin from a prior yeast infection. I did the Nystatin and Triple Paste today. I hope we have the same wonderful results you've seen.

Thanks @Ninja. I asked the nurse today if we could switch to a different antibiotic or reduce the dosage and she said no. :( I will certainly ask the doctor in the future to prescribe something different as this is not fun at all.

I bought butt paste today (I was desperate, I bought several things). I will give it a try tomorrow if we don't have an improvement from the triple paste that we used tonight.

It's probably a yeast infection. :-(

DD gets one every time she is on antibiotics. Her pediatrician said to put Lotramin (athletes foot cream) on it 3x/day for 10 days, and cover it with a thick diaper cream (we use Triple Paste). It works wonders! But the first few days are a fight because the skin is raw and it hurts her so bad, no matter how gentle I am.

Sorry your LO is hurting. Maybe a different antibiotic? I know I've had Augmentin before, and it gave me a terrible case of the runs.
I swear by Butt Paste for diaper rash

LO is 18 months old and currently through day 5 of a 10 day Augmentin regimen for a sinus infection. Her nasal/eye issues are improved as is her cough from the drainage. The problem is we have a diaper rash like I have never seen before. Diaper changes are horrendous as she just cries and writhes in pain.

Here's what we are doing so far:
1) Feeding yogurt daily as well as giving probiotics (Florastar - twice per day).
2) Using a warm wet cloth to clean her rather than wipes.
3) Using Nystatin cream 2-3 times per day (the nurse felt like we were in the starting stage of a yeast infection).
4) We have tried various creams - all lead to screaming but an eventual calm (Dr. Smiths, Triple Paste, Anti Monkey-Butt, Corona).
5) We even tried a paste of a liquid antacid tonight mixed with cornstarch (this was recommended by the nurse to counter the acidity of her urine and bowel movements).
6) We also tried some diaper free time today.

I'm willing to try pretty much anything over the next couple of days while we are at home. My options are more limited come Monday when we go back to daycare (can't do diaper free time there).

What other recommendations do you have that have worked for your LO? Help me get through these next five days without having to cry with my LO at each diaper change.
