@littlek: It was more that I thought he might have a sensory issue based on very often biting his own hands and did some research and found that there can be a link between the two: http://autismsd.com/autism-and-biting-why-do-autistic-children-bite/

But again, I would never say something directly to the parents, I promise!

@MamaMoose: I had never heard of a connection between biting and autism. My son went through a biting phase at daycare and sadly he will still bite if he feels overwhelmed and upset in large group settings. I don't think I would appreciate another parent telling me that my child could potentially have autism because he is going through a biting stage.

@looch: Oh yeah I would never talk to the parents directly! I'm sure they feel horrible enough with everything going on with him. I guess I should just assume the teachers and directors have enough experience to suggest ideas to the parents of how to address it and I should butt out. It's just a sucky situation for all involved.

Since you mentioned that a specialist is coming in, I would just let the experts do their work.

Biting is so common at that age, as is an oral sensory fixation. Perhaps he does have some sensory processing issues, but the diagnosis for ASD requires symptoms in several domains that cannot be properly assessed at 14 months.

It's a slippery slope, the parents are most likely aware and may react badly if you try to inform them if something when you aren't an expert yourself, YKWIM? Of you were a sped teacher, maybe it would be slightly less offensive.

There is a child in my daughter's day care class who has a serious biting problem. He regularly bites other children, and almost constantly chews on his own hands. He's also relatively aggressive in that whenever another child enters the classroom he runs right up to them and gets in their face. I know this very well could all just be a normal developmental phase but he's 14 months and they have had problems with him biting since he was 10 months old. My understanding is that they are bringing in a "specialist" to help and if that doesn't work, the day care will disenroll him. Part of me wonders if he is on the autism spectrum or has some other sensory issue based on him constantly chewing his own hands. But I don't know how to suggest this to the teachers/director, or if I even should. I would feel terrible for his parents if he essentially got kicked out of school, but at the same time, they can't leave him there when he's a constant danger to the other children. My good friend's daughter came home with two horrible bruises on her arms because he bit her twice in one day.
