It's $500+ cheaper per month and more organized than those near us. I will need a cheaper train ticket than now. Now it adds about 8 minutes. I say pick the one you are most happy with and deal with the commute. Daycare is about 10-15 minutes out of the way on top of that. We work 8 hour days, but with the commute and drop off/pick up, our day away from home is close to 11 hours. DH drops off and I pick up. We work in opposite directions and we've found it really helpful to have daycare close to home. I love it! She was in a center by my work, 30-45 mins away depending in traffic. Closer to home is so much better. 1) DH can help out 2) Easier when we are off work and take her to school 3) she isn't in the car for so long. It was bliss, in terms of convenience, but also really expensive.</p> <p>This year, we switched her to a place wayyyy out where I work and now LO drives with me for 50 minutes each way, because it's $800/month cheaper. Commute sucks, but having that extra money is good--the quality of the care is actually better. The place I like the best is the most inconvenient...but I also know people in NYC who have longer/crazier commutes to childcare.</p> <p>I walked 20 minutes in the snow to the first tour. Our commute has always been a 15-minute walk (nanny share). Right now we alternate homes so I get a break, but I'm tired of getting to work sweaty! I drive. We live in a small "metropolitan area" but for all intents and purposes you can just call us rural.</p> <p>There were closer options but we went with the place that felt the best. Its really not terrible- in the morning she is usually pretty quiet and reads books (and then I enjoy a little time to myself on my 15 minute drive to work). Dh works 40 minutes outside of our city in the middle of nowhere, also he's in a carpool. </p> <p>If I'm unable to do drop-off/pick-up for whatever reason, my mom will usually do it or DH will leave work early to get her.
