She will hear "would you like an ice cream" much quicker than "please pick up your toys". </p> <p>DH, on the other hand, has developed the ability to tune me out and yet appear as though he is listening. When he's deep into a book, I've noticed a growing pause between when I speak and when he "hears" what I say. Example:</p> <p>Me: "When you're done reading your book, can you pick up the floor of your room?"<br /> Son: *say nothing, 4-5 seconds go by. then he looks up at me* "What did you say?"</p> <p>I think it's karma for being slow myself when my wife talks to me when I'm deep in thought. I can hear the words she is saying, but for some reason I can't process them until I switch gears and focus on her.</p> <p>Do your kids have a delay in responding to you when you speak to them? How about your SO? </p>
