@psw27: Yeah, that's exactly what I thought as I was eating the seafood, so I wasn't worried. It wasn't until I was pumping that I decided to google it.

I wouldn't dump the milk and I wouldn't worry about any allergies. If anything, by exposing the babies through your milk, you are helping their bodies adjust and become familiar with shellfish. My friends daugther has mild allergies and I believe they told the mom to keep eating small amounts of the allergen foods so that the daughter would get some through the milk and hopefully outgrow the allergy.

@T.H.O.U.: thanks!
@MrsRcCar: Haha, yup. I don't want to dump it either. If for some reason they tell me not to use it, I would probably freeze it. It would hurt too much to see it dumped. Maybe I could use it later when I know they aren't allergic to shellfish. ;)
@Truth Bombs: Yeah, I can see that. It was just what the Internet said and I couldn't find anything from a legit site to confirm it. Yeah, in the future I'll stay away for these foods until it's safe. I just didn't think about this until I was pumping last night. Plus, Guess what? I pumped my all time record last night! :) Definitely on track on building my supply.

@Adira: Oh, ok. Cool, good to know. Thanks!

I don't have any food allergies myself, but both my kids do (one is allergic to milk, the other to peanuts) and I don't avoid those foods and continue to breastfeed them without any issues. Good luck!

There's no reason to believe the babies would be allergic to the same things as you. And I definitely wouldn't want to be dumping milk when it would be so beneficial to the twins to get it. But going forward, I would avoid anything that you think might give you or them a reaction so you don't have to worry about wasting milk.

I wouldn't worry about it. I also wouldn't dump a single drop of milk!!! If you food was cooked properly your babies should be totally fine.

Did you avoid any foods while breast feeding?

So I have a weird allergy to undercooked shellfish. I had a mild reaction to lobster back in college and I think the lobster wasn't cooked all the way. I, also, have to wear gloves when cooking with raw shrimp. After its cooked, I have never had any allergic symptoms. I think it has to do with the iodine. I've had iodine (betadine) topically with no issues but it was used as a dye for my HSG once and I was bed ridden for two days. I think it was the iodine. Since then, if I need procedures they know of my shellfish allergy and know to not use iodine around me. Not really an issue if it's used externally but important in surgery where it can be exposed internally.

Anyway, last night, I had a craving for crabs and DH and I bought lobster, clams and crab legs (from costco) and had ourselves a seafood boil. It was yummy.
But now I'm wondering about the milk that I pumped. I'll definitely bring it to the hospital and ask the nurse and the dr about it.

Sad to think about but I guess it's better safe than sorry.

So did any of your Drs or pediatricians specifically tell you to stay away from foods you've had a mild reaction to?
