@hilsy85: ahhhhh I use my crockpot so often! It is perfect for lazy cooking! I've never done dried beans any other way; I just dump in a box, fill up with water to soak overnight, dump water out and put in fresh, cook on low all day checking every once in a while. Then I freeze in glassware portions. I started doing it after falling down a Google wormhole on the dangers of BPA (which is in can lids, or at least used to be) but now it's just habit.

@scg00387: we actually don't have a crockpot (crazy, I know!) and I am usually pretty lazy--canned beans are so easy! :) But I might give dried a try.

@hilsy85: I was pondering this as well, glad you started this thread. Also, FWIW, dry beans are super easy in a crockpot and avoids the salt issue

@artbee: hmm we use a lot of salt when cooking I think..I love salty things!

And of course, after starting this thread, I made LO some purees of white beans and only realized after I was done that the canned beans had salt on them! I had rinsed them before pureeing but now I'm nervous...I guess I'll just do small portions.

@hilsy85: Also think about the serving size too. How much salt is in one stick? I don't think more than a gram? Plus, he probably won't be eating a whole stick. 0.4 grams of sodium is 400 mg which is usually how they label it.

I was reading about this in my BLW book. Salt is bad b/c their kidneys can't handle a lot of salt. It's recommended that a baby have no more than 1 gram (0.4g sodium) per day. I keep an eye out for it on packages. I also don't add any salt to his food.

@hilsy85: When she eats what we eat, it usually contains salt. If I do something just for her, like her steamed green beans tonight, I don't add it. It's basically a convenience thing for me :)

@artbee: @Weagle: @TurtleDoves: ok thanks! I don't use salt while making his food, but as he gets more into table food/"Real" food, it seems like it'll be hard to avoid!

When do you plan to start using salt with LO's food?

I purposely avoid salt when feeding him *his* food. But if he eats off my plate (minimally) or if we feed him some food off our table at a restaurant then, I won't be choosey with that. I figure, it's just a small percentage of his total intake. Plus, I always make sure he gets his water so, I feel like in moderation, salt is OK.

I paid attention to portions for foods that are known to be salty (sausage, for instance), but didn't worry too much beyond that.

Once she hit finger foods I didn't worry too much about it. Like you said, people add salt to things, and since I don't want to have to make all of LO's food and we like to go out, I can't be that picky. At home when I make her food I don't add salt though.

Do you completely avoid any foods with added salt for LO? For instance, the cheese sticks (organic mozzarella string cheese) that I bought to give to him have salt added to them...and when we go out to restaurants and we give him teeny bits of food, I'm sure everything is cooked with some salt added. How careful do i have to be? He's 7 months old.
