I don’t do anything special, and we travel fairly frequently. I always pack a pharmacy and have rarely ever needed it.

My son once broke his leg when he was 2.5, about a week before a trip, so that was a huge bummer. We still went (had to fly) and had to modify some plans (like skip Paris) and do less exploring. So sometimes right before a big trip I avoid things like trampolines and am a little extra cautious at the playground, to hopefully avoid injury.

I wipe down plane and hotel stuff like crazy. But it hasn't always worked (eta but mostly it has!)

I used to avoid kids the week before but since my dd started preschool then elementary it's kind of impossible... we'll see this summer when there's no summer session and my son hasn't started yet.

I'd change their clothes often too.

I don't do this all the time but during full season I change them every time they come back from somewhere. So annoying and so much laundry but I don't want to risk it!

The NP at my ped office suggested giving a bath after arriving at each destination. We didn't heed that advice on a recent plane trip after arriving home and my daughter ended up with a puking virus the next day that my son and our nanny also ended up catching. I'm convinced she got it from the plane as we were staying with family while we were traveling and they weren't sick. I'd probably follow the advice of others and wipe down plane surfaces, etc. and then do a bath.

yup, what @gingerbebe said. Without fail, my kid gets sick Every.Single.Time. we visit my in-laws....
Where I live, you just stop by a pediatric after-hours clinic on the weekend if you need to. I can think of half a dozen locations off the top of my head, in addition to our amazing children's hospital in case there is a true emergency. I was really shocked to hear that this isn't a thing in NYC, and was so thankful for a local friend with kids who could tell me where to go.

I wipe down the airplane armrests and the tray table, but more than that, nothing special.

It’s a crapshoot if my son gets sick, it usually occurs when we visit others with kids, as someone has a cough and then my son will get it. He’s old enough for cough syrup now, so I have that and Advil on me at all times.

I try to keep my kids in their routine the days leading up to a trip (i.e. just their normal germ ponds of daycare and home and church) - nowhere new. I keep my kids in the double stroller or wear them in the airport so they don't touch anything. I also carry Lysol wipes with me and wipe down EVERYTHING in the airport or restaurants or planes or whatever and make everyone hand sanitize.

We also obsessively wash our hands all the time. But my kids get ear infections like its their only joy in life, so I'm cray.

We also have them take the Immune-C gummies every night and I pack Cuties on the flight as snacks. And they can have all the juice and fruit smoothies they want in the plane and at the airport.

Also, my kids basically always need to go to an urgent care while on vacation for one reason or other, so I'd just have that info on you, in case you need it. Like, know where the closest one to your destination is. And I carry a full kit of children's Advil, Tylenol, Benadryl, Zarbees, Nose Frida, antibiotic ear drops from our doctor for our kiddos (because they have tubes), and saline. I have never not used my kit while traveling.

Yes wipe everything on the plane for sure. Maybe even bring those plastic place mats that we used to use for the baby that stick down and use it on the plane tray.

Before trips I don't let them see other kids for about a week. Crazy I know but whatever. Sick kids won't be fun on a trip.

On the plane I wipe everything down. Use TONS of hand sanitizer and wash hands all the time.

If you're going somewhere warm and keep good hand hygiene, you should be fine!

We went to a super kid friendly resort in punta Cana (like it was made for kids and young families) and the kids ended up with HFM which was fairly unavoidable I think. So much swimming and splash pads etc with kids every where. It was just the last day my son came down with it though so it didn't effect us much while there.

Good luck!

We are 2 days out from our first big family trip. We will be flying and staying in a resort for 7 nights. I promise you I am NOT a germaphobe but this week I am on pins and needles worrying that my kids (4 yo, 11 mos)will get sick prior to us leaving and now that we are so close to leaving I am freaking out about them catching the flu while traveling.

Do you do anything different or special when traveling to avoid germs/sickness? Should I just step up the hand washing and be extra vigilant about DS putting things in his mouth??

The kicker is that my kids are generally pretty healthy. DS has only had one mild ear infection/cold and he's 11 mos old and DD is not sick often.

Help calm my nerves... please..... or give me some advice to help avoid the germies....
