We mostly just watch Hulu and Netflix so this isn't an issue for us. I hate local news and I hate having what I watch get interrupted for this kind of stuff. It's very upsetting and I don't want to be immersed in it 24/7.

We canceled our Direct TV a couple of years ago and only watch shows on Hulu or Net Flix, sometimes YouTube on the big screen (through Apple TV). We read about the news through Yahoo news on the iPad. It was an adjustment not having sports channels or news in real time but we got use to it. Our Direct TV bill was horrendous at $185 per month because they kept increasing prices. We threatened to cancel and they didn't offer any incentives to stay so we canceled. Great decision for us.

Even reading about the current news and watching short clips makes me cry. The world has become so ugly filled with unkind people that aren't afraid to act out on their rage. I try not to get scared thinking about what's to come.

I can't watch because I cry. So on days like today we forgo our usual Today Show in the background for some Netflix or YouTube. And avoid Facebook for me!

We don't have cable anymore (just do streaming services) so I generally only read about news online and LO doesn't really encounter it. That said, we often discuss current events while she is in the room (recently including the Brock Turner case and the Orlando shooting). She seems to tune us out so it hasn't been an issue. Not sure what we will do when she starts to listen in.

I pvr the news or restart it if I forget to pvr and watch once they've gone down. Even the top of the hour radio news I have to really watch, too much for their little ears yet.

@Foodnerd81: I really hope I misheard her. The phrasing was weird, not how they would talk about it on the news. No anchor says "I'm going to rape you" in a newscast. I'm still really upset about it.

I keep it off in general unless it's something for her. On weekends dh often has it on. She's not quite 3 and I don't think she understood at all, though somehow I mind her hearing about Orlando less than brock turner. I think we do need to be mindful of keeping it off though.

@oliviaoblivia: that makes me want to cry. I hope you misheard. What a sad state we are in.

@oliviaoblivia: I've had to do the same with most movies during the day. He didn't understand why he couldn't watch Fast and Furious when she was in the room or why I am so against horror movies when she is young.

Another reason why we are pretty happy we cancelled cable.

At my parents though my mom likes to watch either the morning news or the night news as they are cooking. When we visit there are many times I have to ask her to turn it off because even without mass tragedies, there are still too many stories my 4 year old can comprehend and doesn't need to hear about.

Dh watches the news or used to I should say.
I always keep it off because I can't predict the content.
After Brock Turner last week I told dh it can't be on with little ears around. I overheard DD1 playing with her dolls and saying "I'm going to rape you"
I can't handle how i feel about hearing her say that. I don't know if I miss heard her, I pray I did, and I know she has no idea what that means, but OMG.

Good question! The only place my son gets "regular TV" is at my parents house (regular TV=not netflix) and they are avid watchers of the news.

It's come up several times that the news, especially at the 5-7pm timeframe is a bit too violent and full of adult themes, so they try to keep it off, but sometimes, it slips through and yes, he sees fires, hears about shootings, etc.

We talk about it, I don't want him to be completely shielded from what's going on, I want him to be an active "watcher" and learn to be aware of his surroundings.

We have two different thoughts. I keep the TV off, period. I just don't like to sit down and watch TV anymore. My husband keeps it on TV land or something and then turns it to CNN after she goes to bed.

Does anyone else avoid turning on the tv after tragedies that you know will be on the news and possibly in breaking news situations that come on during regular broadcasting? We sometimes will have sports on the tv on weekends but yesterday we avoided the tv all together just so we wouldn't have to explain the tragedy in Orlando to our 4 year old.

Do you try to keep the news off after events like the shooting in Orlando? Or do you try to use it as a learning experience?
