My LO is just a few weeks younger than yours, I think. She has been resisting bedtime lately after several weeks of going down really easily, but I have attributed it to being able to express her desires. When I say, "Night night?" She says, "No, no, no," which is a newish thing. She also has an ear infection so I wonder if that has something to do with it.

Right now, she is up around 7 and she naps at about 12-12:30pm. She can make until 1pm most days if needed, as long as we don't ride in the car. So that's 5-6 hours. She naps about 2 hours and then goes to bed at 7:30-8 so that's another 5-6 hours. The bedtime fight doesn't really change if she goes to bed earlier or later, though, so I really think it is probably behavioral, at least for us.

@illumina: Well...it seems to be going in phases right now. The first was the hardest and maybe lasted a month. 18 was the very hardest because he wasn't old enough to actually explain and reason with. My 2 yo understands what I say.

@Mrs Green Grass: this is exactly what we have been going through the past few weeks...trying to stall and then crying before we even get her in the cot! *sigh*

Does it pass?

DS is 19 months. He wakes between 7:30/8am and goes down for a nap around 12:30 (5 hours awake). Wakes up at 2:30pm and goes down for bed around 8:30/9pm (6 hours awake).

@Mrs Green Grass: you could definitely be right! She goes down easily (usually) for naps, but she does all she can to avoid sleeping at bedtime.

@lady grey: we have had the same bedtime routine since she was a baby, but I love the idea to dim the lights earlier!

Thanks all!! This is so helpful. I've kept her awake longer tonight, so we will see how that goes. It doesn't seem like 6 hours of awake time is all that crazy then. She's also been taking 2.5+ hour naps. I'm thinking I might either need to push bedtime or wake her up earlier from her nap (hard to do as a sahm!).

LO is 18 months old and up from 7-12:30, so 5.5 hours. At daycare, she naps about 90 min and then goes to bed at 7:15-7:30 (5.5 hours). On weekends, she naps 2-2.5 hours and still goes to sleep at 7:30 (4.5 hrs). I'm guessing she doesn't get quite enough at daycare and is catching up on weekends.

18 months was a real tough time for bedtime for us. He was aware and verbal enough to know what was happening and try to make it not happen. That might be your issue more than the number of hours after nap. My son has pretty much consistently slept a little over 5 hours after nap (still). He's two.

@Zbug: Around 18 months LO (now 21mo) started being able to stay awake longer. He is awake from 730-1230 in the morning, but I can easily push him to 1 or 130, although I try not to. He naps for two hours so is usually up from 230-730pm, but can easily stay up until 8 or 830 without melting down.

To help him wind down at the end of the day we usually head to his room 30-45 mins before bedtime to do quiet play with dimmed lights. Also- this may sounds weird but we started doing baths by candlelight to help him mellow out and avoid any bright lights before bed. It really does the trick!

23 months- up at 6 or 6:30, nap around 11:30/12:00, bed at 6:45/7.

She only naps for 90 minutes. She seems to have a slightly lower need for sleep, I think? She doesn't really seem tired if we stick to that schedule. I'm a big believer in early bedtimes, so I plan to adjust whatever in order to preserve the 7:00 bedtime for a long time.

Up at 6, nap at 11:30/12 to 1:30/2, bed at anywhere from 7:45-8 pm. This is since the time change--it used to be shifted an hour earlier all day.

She is 24 months. Up 630/700, nap 1230-230, and then bedtime is 730, but she doesn't fall asleep till 800. She needs 30 mins to wind down.

Today she had a crappy crappy nap and despite putting her down early, she still isn't asleep. :(

E gets up at 630/645am. She goes down for a nap after lunch-usually 1230/1 lately. Down for two hours. Bed at 730...usually rolls around until 8

So about 5-6 hours each time. 23 months

Let's see. She's usually up at 730/745 and takes a nap around 1 or 130 so that's 5 hours. Then she's up anywhere between 330 and 430 and is usually in her bed around 730 so that's another 4 or 5 hours depending on the day. She's 18 months.

Usually 4-5hrs between nap and bed at 18 months. I know what you mean about them not being ready for bed and some days it takes her longer than others. But she seems happy enough to go down at 7pm regardless so we have stuck with it.

My LO is almost 18 mo old, but she's always bumped up her awake times a bit early. For a long time now, she's been awake about 4.5-5 hrs before nap and about 5 hours btw nap and bed. She's been fighting bedtime lately (in a wanting to play not in her overtired way). She hasn't been falling asleep for the night until closer to 6 hours after waking up from her nap. I'm wondering if I should just push back bedtime. How long are your toddlers awake between nap and bed?
