@preggomeggo82: It might! I guess I'll have to wait and find out. The good news is that they assured me I'd have a scan of some kind, so if they aren't planning on it I can hopefully press them a little bit. DH works such long hours and is taking off especially for the appointment, and it would really suck for him to miss the scan if it has to happen at a later time.
@MrsRoo: Thanks so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I really appreciate it!

@ChiCalGoBee: technically, b-scans were the precursor to what we currently use. I have seen different textbooks refer to modern 2D scans as b-scans though. It's definitely possible to hear a heartbeat this soon with Doppler, it just depends on your offices policies. Most obs won't use Doppler in the first tri.

Could it mean something about the internal versus abdominal ultrasounds? Those early visits tend to be transvaginal.

@MrsRoo: Thank you so much for sharing. Okay, I'm guessing it just means that they use some type of grayscale imagining (is that different than an ultrasound?) and a doppler to try and get a heartbeat? I guess I'll find out on the day of. Yes, I have no idea why they'd want me to then make another appointment either. I asked them because my husband only gets so much time off work, and I wanted him to be there for the scan.
@mrs. 64: You did?? That's amazing! I hope I can, too! We're not telling anyone before this appointment (and have a big surprise for my family in person for a few weeks after this appointment), so I want some verification that there's actually something in there

Don't know about the B-scan, but you can probably hear a HB at 7.5 weeks. I did!

I'm studying abdominal ultrasonography right now, so maybe there is something different for OB that I'm not aware of, but a B-scan can refer to any sort of gray scale imaging in ultrasound. I'd imagine its a regular scan. I'm not sure why they'd want you to get a separate scan the following week though....

Hi everyone,

I am very newly pregnant, and am highly anticipating our first doctor's appointment at the end of March. According to the paperwork I received there is not ultrasound/sonogram at that appointment, so I looked into it. The receptionist at my OB's office told me that they do a "B-scan"(?) during that appointment, so there is no need for an additional sonogram at that time. Previously I'd been told I need to get a separate sonogram a week later (which made no sense to me).

I looked into "B-scan" online, and it's apparently an opthomological procedure? What? She clearly could have made a mistake, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has had this scan, and what it is? My understanding it that a doppler alone cannot detect heartbeat as early as 7.5 weeks (which I'll be at that appointment).

Thanks to all for your help!
