When my LO was under say.... 4-5 mo old no it didn't seem to bother her much. But naps got trickier at that point and she never was able to put herself back to sleep so I got suuuuper annoyed when someone would make my dog bark and wake the baby and she either wouldn't go back to sleep or I'd have to go get her back to sleep. I had a hostile note on my door for like a year because of it.... lol

Both my girls are light and crappy sleepers. So, yes, one our dog would bark it would without a doubt wake them up. When you have spent 45 plus minutes putting them down for bedtime and your dog barks at nothing. And it wakes the baby up? You're tired and haven't gotten more than a 2 hour stretch for God knows how long? You're going to be annoyed.

You = me. :)

It's hit or miss whether our dog's barking will wake LO. She's still pretty young though, and often napping in the same room where the dog is, so we'll see what changes as she gets older.

@SweetiePie: yes it's that sudden loud jarring noise that wakes them up often. LO sleeps through household background noise, chatting, traffic outside. The sudden noises scare her and she wakes.

My dogs bark a lot if they see someone walking up to our door and if someone knocks (we don't have a doorbell). So I put a sign up saying not to knock. If LO is already asleep, no it won't wake him but if he is trying to fall asleep then it will prevent him from getting to sleep. But we do have fairly loud white noise going.

Familiar loud noises don't seem to wake him. Live in NYC near a hospital so lots of sirens and horns and street noise.
But things like a loud bang if I drop a pan or the doorbell which doesn't ring often at all seem to wake him. He's 17 months.

I had always heard to not be quiet when they slept so that they get used to noise and can sleep through it. But once he was born I had so much anxiety about his sleep that I tip toed and whispered. Not sure if it makes a difference.

@FannyMae: Oh, my neighbor has a dog with a super loud bark. It's pretty far away so it doesn't' affect the babies. It mainly annoys us adults.

My dog's bark can be heard outside our house but the two neighbors on each side don't have kids. On the other side, there's a neighbor with a small kid but I would hope my dogs' bark is not heard.

We have three dogs, and their barking definitely wakes up DD. One of our dogs has long nails we can't trim, and his walking is so loud! I'm pretty sure it's what wakes her up most mornings

I have a sign on the door saying not to knock or ring the doorbell. LO will usually sleep through a brief but of barking, but if it keeps going it wakes her up.

Recently our older dog has gotten REALLY bad about completely freaking out barking out of nowhere, especially in the middle of the night. It's so sudden no one could sleep through it. So she got a bark collar, and it's stopped, thankfully.

our white noise is pretty loud... when she was younger I think she was startled a little bit but I don't think it ever woke her up fully.

Our dogs are LOUD when the doorbell rings but it still never wakes LO up. She's a very heavy sleeper plus the white noise is loud too.

@bluestriped bee: In a word, no. We have four dogs. One is deaf so she barks basically all the time and doesnt realize how loud she is. The others bark frequently, too. We knew we couldnt let it bother us because it's going to happen! Especially with all the visitors we had constantly ringing the bell over my maternity leave. He sleeps right through. Doesn't even seem to register it. We joke that he was used to it in utero. ;)

I have two dogs and one barks at anyone that comes to or near our door (or house).

Sometimes that babies are not fazed by barking but sometimes it startles them. It may or may not result in them waking up.

So I guess I'm not bothered if the mailman comes and rings the doorbell because my dog likes to bark.

Do you feel like your LO does not mind being startled or awakened because they are already sensitive to your dog barking?

Though, my babies are 6 months and usually they can go back to sleep. Maybe later I'll be annoyed with my dogs and or unexpected visitors.
