@Foodnerd81: He was 9 months! It wasn't that long ago. It's definitely not worth it if you'll worry. We worry enough! :)

@Pepper: how old was your LO at the time?

I feel like at this stage (9 months) I wouldn't worry if I did it by accident, but doing it on purpose is different.

I called my pediatrician about this in a panic one day because I gave LO something with honey in the ingredients by accident! They told me not to worry about honey as an ingredient. The risk is incredibly small to begin with, and at his age, it's even less of a risk. They said that there isn't a magic switch that is flipped at 12 months... it's more of a concern for much younger babies.

@Mrs. Lion: yeah I feel like I will probably just be cautious. Boo. I wanted to make us those pancakes. Another couple of months won't hurt to wait.

My ped said no to anything with honey on the ingredients list. The processing may not heat the honey hot enough to kill the botulism spores. Around 11 months he said it wasn't really a big deal anymore but we held off just in case.

The only food I know that is honey flavored that actually says do not feed to infants is Chobani.

honey flavor usually has nothing to do with honey - do those products even contain actual honey?. This is definitely not something I would worry about; at all.

I dont know the science behind it... but I'd probably do it. Im not terribly alarmist about food though. C had honey and peanut butter before one (she was like 10/11 months old).

I know no honey before one. But does anyone have a reputable reference about honey *flavored* things-- like, honey nut cheerios, or commericially baked honey wheat bread, or (what I'm specifically wondering about) Kodiak Cakes Whole Wheat Oat and Honey flapjack mix? The ingredients say it contains 'dried honey'.

I know I should call my ped if I'm questioning, but frankly, I don't feel like the advice I get over the phone from them is that hot anyway (the nurse was looking at mothering.com to answer my question once. I was like, yeah, I have the internet too.)

Anyway-- anyone know? I'd love to give her these pancakes, since they have no added sugar, but certainly not at the risk of botulism!
