LO is 22 months and we keep his door shut. Im not really worried about the cat hurting him, more worried about it waking him up! I was definitely freaked out in the beginning though before he could move about the cat getting into the crib. I don't worry about that anymore now that I know any suffocating move on the cat's part would wake him up.

We have a dog but both girls rooms are always closed when they're sleeping. We've taken to closing them during the day to reduce allergens in their room.

But besides that the dog is always around the girls.

@hotchildinthecity: You clearly know cats! We have two and they frequently scratch at the bathroom door when I'm in there. So I've reconciled myself to never ever having privacy, because they won't let up until they get in. Even for MOTN super quick pee breaks. We can't shut our bedroom door at night for the same reason.

@yoursilverlining: This has been a fear of mine the last week or so. We plan to have the bassinet in our room for the first several weeks, and I worry that the cats (especially the really dickish one) will try to crawl in there at night with LO. She's the one who sleeps in the clothes basket if we don't get a chance to put things away right away after doing laundry. And a bassinet is as close to a laundry basket as it gets. I hope they'll be like yours and stay clear once LO arrives.

We started letting our daughter sleep with our two dogs (gentle little malti-poos) about a month before she turned 4. They actually don't want to sleep next to her and prefer to sleep at the foot of her mattress.

They have always had access to her room. The cats have never tried to get in the crib (I have to shoe Autumn out of the car seat some), but instead they sleep under it or in the rocking chair. Sometimes my dog will lay in the room with her. When she is older, I won't mind if they sleep in the bed with her, but they spend a lot of time staying just out of reach right now.

We have a dog, she's always been allowed in her room but she's never gotten in bed with her. However, the dog always sleeps with us and lately LO has been wandering into our bed as well in the middle of hte night/early morning, so we are big old happy family. She also cuddles on the couch by her. She's 2.

The cats will never sleep with her because they don't let you sleep. They can't sleep with us either because they just head-butt you for cuddles all night long. We'd let the dog sleep with her probably when she moved to a floor bed? So long as they still got along great. And I already guarantee she will get a puppy (i.e. young dog. not legit puppy) for some birthday before she is 5 or 6 and I'm sure that dog will always sleep with her.

@hotchildinthecity: yup, yup, yup!!
Before our LO was born, our cat would constantly jump into the bassinet and sleep there, glare out at people from the basinet, etc. I’m pretty sure she mostly did it because every single time my MIL saw her do it, MIL would have pitch a fit (my cat is kind of a dick that way) about how the cat was planning on smothering LO once LO was born. The cat jumped into the bassinet exactly 0 times after LO was born.

We co-sleep, and the cat has only cuddled up to LO in the bed once, though she often sleeps on my feet in the bed. Depending on your cats, they may have zero interest is being close to your LO for a long time!

I have two dogs. I would be more concerned about them having access to a toddler who can get up and move around and not have perfect pet manners yet who is unsupervised with the pups than a baby who is contained in a crib out of their reach.

@hotchildinthecity: haha so so true. our cat paws at doors that are shut, including our LO's. SO ANNOYING. haha

We currently close L's door, but I honestly don't know what to do about this in the future... it's on my mind often!

Yeah, my cats are not interested in spending time with my daughter. We have one dog, though, who feels quite responsible for her safety, and often sleeps outside her door. We keep the door closed for noise, but sometimes we'll let him in, and he'll curl right up with her.

It's always been my experience that if you close cats off to something, they just spend all their time trying to get in there. So they're always allowed in J's room. They will lay in his crib when he's not in there but not with him. I'm guessing they would act similarly with a baby.

M is 9 months and the cats are allowed in his room, but they don't go in his bed.

D is 7 likes his door closed, but he would have cats in his bed if it were open. When I was in the hospital, D and the cats stayed at my parents house. They both slept in the bed with him there.

If you have child and a cat or dog, how old was your child when you allowed the pet to access your child's bedroom when the child is sleeping?

Our cats have free reign of our bedroom at night, and one of them is usually sleeping by my feet when I wake up in the morning. I guess I'm wondering when my son might be able to share the cat love!

Right now this is just a theoretical question for me. My son is *way* too young to be left alone with an animal. At night, he always sleeps with the door to his room closed.
