My DD loves soup always has, I put some in a bowl with very little liquid, and it's a mess but she enjoys getting the noodles/veggies/ect. out with a spoon.

I've only given DS soup twice. Once was at a Japanese restaurant where we had the type of spoon @Autumnlove mentioned and it was fine. The other time was at home with a baby spoon and it was a big mess.

@twodoghouse: I didn't even know anyone tried to feed their babies soup! My 18 month old definitely would just dump it on the floor.

But I do give her the "guts" of soup a lot. This week I made turkey sausage, white bean and kale soup, so when my husband and I had that, I just drained it with a slotted spoon and gave her the soup without the broth to eat with a fork.

In the target 1-3 dollar aisle I found a bowl with a straw attached to it. Genius! So DD (at 2.5) can use a spoon to scoop up the chunky parts of her soup like meatballs, veggies and noodles but then drink up the broth.

If the soup if pureed, LO eats the soup with a straw. Otherwise she either does a straw/spoon/fork combo, or uses a spoon. I just give her our regular adult sized spoons and she goes to town. It's really messy though.

@raintreebee: @twodoghouse: yeah, I'm not too concerned about the salt. I almost always make mine, but we eat so little with a high salt content that a bit in an otherwise healthy food doesn't worry me too much. I agree, it is so cute to see her sucking at the spoon!

My child is obsessed with soup. Obsessed. I do a few things:

Feed her soup wit a big spoon- the whole spoon doesn't have to fit, just enough so you can tilt the broth into her mouth.

Use a baby spoon to give her the "guts" of the soup with a bit of broth-pieces of veggies, chicken, meatballs, etc.

Give her the innards on her tray to eat by herself-this works best to give her noodles.

For puréed soups, we also got the Twist Kiinde disposable pouches, but they don't work very well with straight broth. (I learned this the hard way :silly: ) https://www.kiinde.com/foodii_starter_kit_product.php

I've started working on getting her to drink the broth with help. We have this set that we use for her food: http://shop.greentoys.com/p/green-toys-dish-set?pp=20 , and the tea cups hold a good amount of liquid for practicing. The spoons are also a little wider, so you can get more on there.

That was probably way more detail than you bargained for ;) I hope you find something that works. Soup is a God-send around here. She will literally eat anything if I put it in broth. Girl after my own heart!

@twodoghouse: If you've made it yourself, then I wouldn't worry. It's funny that homemade soup didn't even occur to me as an option, lol. Maybe those big spoons would help. Or you could try feeding the broth separately from the noodles/vegetables.

@raintreebee: I made it myself and it's really bland (like water, carrots, and noodles, almost) although it probably does have more salt than they've ever experienced before. I guess I'm not too worried about it from time to time? I'm just trying to find something they like and can tolerate (we're dealing with tummy problems from solids).

My LO eats a lot of soup at daycare, and at home - - but (at least in our case) it’s kind of misleading to call it true soup, as it’s soup with most of the liquid taken out so it’s easier for them to eat.

Also, you might need to look around for different spoons. Some baby spoons are so dang tiny they seem more suited for dollhouses than real babies/toddlers! We were able to find some wider and flatter spoons that are easier to eat soup with. My mom gave me some vintage tea spoons she found that are like the PERFECT size for little hands - I guess people were smaller back then! :silly:

In today's installment of "things that should be obvious but I can't figure out" - how the heck do you feed babies soup? Is there a strategy here I'm missing?

One drop of soup fits on those baby spoons. And the second the spoon gets anywhere near my kids they bat at it and then the one drop of soup flies off? My cousin's daycare almost exclusively feeds the kids soup for lunch. Are you kidding me? What kind of witchcraft do her teachers use to make this happen?

I just had to fish the noodles out and give them those to eat because the soup was not happening today. I'd like to try this again someday, though, because I like making soup. I just want more soup in their mouths and less on their pjs. Help?
