Thanks everyone, you all make some good points  .. The more I think about it, I am more convinced that DH and I should start TTC around May of next year to have an early 2016 baby. I would have loved to start TTC now but I don’t think we are financially ready for two LOs in daycare just yet.

My kids are march and August. Not sure what the cutoff is. I'd prefer they enter in as of 12/31 cutoff, whether or not they are youngest or oldest. We had such difficulty having our kids, no way was I thinking of due dates lol.

TN's cutoff is August 31. Where we live, if your child turns five after August 31, but before September 30, they can be tested for "kindergarten readiness." We miss that window anyway with an October birthday.

I am very glad LO will be close to 6 & among the oldest in her class when she starts kindergarten. I think it will hopefully make it easier for her to excel. We will have to pay for childcare for an additional year, yes, but with how structured school is these days, I would not want her in kindergarten when she is a young 5 year old.

I find it a little annoying that our school district's cutoff is 9/1 since DS's b-day is in the middle of November. Where I grew the cutoff was in late December. So we'll have to pay for daycare for an additional year.

@oliviaoblivia: I was two years younger than my brother and one grade behind. He did a transitional K-1st program. He blames all his life problems on it, but all-in-all, I don't think us being one year apart made any real difference. Other than that he was an awful student (behavior-wise) so I always had to prove to my teachers that I wasn't awful... But I don't think a year would have made a difference there.

We have an early October baby, and this did originally concern me, but I'm trying to think positively about it. My brother was one of the younger kids in his class and he ended up needing to stay back in first grade. I was one of the oldest in my class (January bday and our cutoff was December) and I always did well in school.

I was recently thinking about when to TTC #2 and I'm actually leaning towards going for another fall baby so that both kids are older in their respective classes instead of one being older and one being younger.

I agree with @JennyG. Many kids benefit from that extra year and being a bit older when they start kindergarten! And in the long run, my child getting the best education and start in school possible is worth an extra year of preschool or daycare. In our state (and probably most) there are ways you can get around it and start your child even if they turn 5 after the cutoff, but not many kids benefit from that.

That being said, I'll experience both - I have one son with a May birthday, so he'll be one of the younger kids in his class. This LO is coming sometime in the next 3 weeks, so he'll be one of the oldest.

My birthday was the day after the cutoff, but they let me go ahead because I was so advanced already. My mom still isn't sure if it was the right decision, because emotionally I've always been behind, but I was so advanced that even in "gifted" classes (what they called it) I was frequently bored. It's not something we're worrying about, though since we're planning to homeschool it isn't really an issue.

We are expecting a lo this October and the cutoff is September 1 here. I dislike that for her kindergarten year she will basically be 6 the whole time but when you think about it, kindergarten now is basically what 1st grade was when we were little. On top of that, in our district at least, red shirting is so common that she won't even be one of the oldest, a huge percentage of kids with summer birthdays here get held back so there are likely to be a handful of kids with earlier birthdays.

I do wish the preschool situation would change though, originally I planned to put our kids in at 3 but that means three years of preschool! Not to mention finding one that will offer any academic challenge here for under 12k a year even for half days is so hard! I hope something changes in the next three years...

@Mrsbells: The cutoff in our state is Sept 1st. We wouldn't change TTC because of starting school. I would prefer not to have a baby with a birthday around the holidays (mine is Jan 2, so I know it sucks).

We have Sept daughter who misses the cut off in our town by 10 days. When we were TTC I didn't know the cut off / didn't even think about this at all, but now I wish we had at least just skipped Aug/Sep due dates.

I'm not really worried about her being the oldest in her class, what bothers me is that we will be paying an entire extra year's worth of daycare because of TEN days. Since we definitely can't afford more than 2 kids in daycare at once we are probably done after baby #2...because we'd have to wait for DD #1 to be in kindergarten (at age 6) before having #3.

my birthday is oct 1 and i was always one of the youngest... for example, i think i started kindergarten at 4 and turned 5 a month in. i never had any issues and actually ended up being moved to the gifted program at another school from gr 4 onward... i think the effect on a child depends on the individual child and most parents know what their child can handle best. i think i would have really struggled if i was held back and was one of the oldest in all my classes.

Our cutoff is 9/1, and LO was born 11/17. We didn't mind him being one of the oldest, especially after reading Outliers. My mom thought about holding me back (August baby). That being said, I was one of the youngest, and I did just fine and excelled, as did DH, a June baby.

My sister is September, and missed the cutoff by 7 days. She was the oldest in her class.

My SIL is a September baby, and my ILs forged her birth certificate to make her 9/1 instead so she'd be only one grade behind DH. Crazy!

As a teacher, I can tell you that no parent has ever regretted holding from enter K when their birthday was near the cutoff. I can also tell you that an overwhelming number of students needing intervention or learning support have birthdays where they could have been held back for one more year, but were sent to K as a very young 5 year old. Just some food for thought.

@78h2o: yeah I'm in Canada. We have the same tax year debate as well. It's a tough decision. Financially having her Dec. 29th is way better.... Tax deduction and a year less in day care. But she will be one year and 51 weeks younger than #1 but only one school year behind. That feels like a crummy thing to do to #1.

@Mrsbells: is if by state or district?

We live in the corner of three districts. Two have a September 1 cut off & the other has an August 15.

We have an October baby & a September baby. This didn't affect our family planning but it is something I regularly think about. Chloe is a smart cookie & we worry she will be bored with an extra year of preschool.

Our second daughter was born 9.2 and I'm anxious to see how strict they'll be with a 9.1 cut off!

Thanks everyone. I guess my main issue is I don’t want my LO to stay back a whole year in daycare because his/her birthday is after the cut off. I have a few friends who are going through this and are quite frustrated. Our first LO is an April baby so she is perfectly in the middle. I think we may shoot for something around March/April/May again

Never thought about this before. My LO was born 12/4 and the cutoff is 9/1, so I guess she will be on the older side of things. While I can see a few potential drawbacks (daycare cost), I think there are just as many positives. It will give her more time to mature and prepare for school. Although I now see a monetary drawback to have a baby born later in the year, from a daycare standpoint, the tax benefits are best for a baby born late in the year (in the sense that you get the same deduction, even though you haven't had a full year of child-related expenses). :)

@oliviaoblivia: am I correct in thinking you are in Canada? In the US, you'd definitely want to have the baby before Jan 1 to get the 2014 tax deduction.

Our cut-off is 8/31 and LO is a Nov baby, so he'll be one of the oldest. When I was a kid, the cut-off was 10/15 and I'm a Sept baby, so I was always one of the very youngest, but it never bothered me. Eh, being a pre-k teacher, honestly all kids are different and it's hard to say. My kids have to be 4 before September to be in my class. My first student turned 5 last week and he's honestly not one of the ones I thought would have been the oldest.

However, one of the reasons we are waiting until December to TTC is so that #1 and future #2 will be 2 grades apart in school.

Well, all I can say is things change :) When LO was born my state's cutoff date was October 15th, her birthday is October 1st. But they have since switched it to July 15th. Our next baby is a spring baby, but I wouldn't have changed my TTC dates based on that because you never know how long it will take you to get a BFP.
