You can either accept their policy or choose not to shop there. I've worked in retail. Let me tell you, it's a pain when customers don't save their receipts and expect the store to bend over backwards for them. Even with a loyalty card, it normally involves multiple parties at the corporate level to find the transaction. Doing this research is a courtesy, not a requirement. It's the customers responsibility to save the receipt or accept whatever the store is willing to credit without one. I understand that this can be frustrating for customers but it is what it is.

I think it is fair. Without a receipt you have no original proof of purchase, the policy has to be the same across the board regardless of if you are a member or not.

Also, you should be aware of any returns policy before you purchase something.

Or, keep your receipts!

@Mrsbells: they also accept ALL competitors coupons, so I use Babies R Us coupons there all the time. Today I'm going to buy LOs convertible carseat because BBB has offered to price match some random site's price on the Diono RXT. Love them!

That is why I can't stand BRU. We have credits there from gift cards so I usually just get diapers when on sale. I only shop buy buy baby for LO's needs. Such a better return policy.

@Mrsbells: If you have a buy buy baby near you and they sell the same items, return it to them. They will let you return anything that they sell for store credit. I shop exclusively at Buy Buy Baby for this reason. They have the best return policy! I don't want to worry about a "buy protection plan", because if something I buy from them breaks they will let you return or exchange it.

I only shop at Babies R Us when I have a gift card because I find them so annoying..

@Mrsbells: I think that if you have your receipt and it's within ___ days, almost all stores do offer cash back. If you don't have your receipt, some places offer store credit - and some places don't!

Never heard of partial store credit back... that's a new one to me!

It's fairly standard practice in retail to return something for the lowest sale price if you don't have a receipt.

Target has the same policy for returns without a receipt. I always thought it was fair. If you don't have a receipt, there's no proof to show that you paid full price, sale price or clearance price. I thought it was a way to prevent scammers. You know people who buy things at sale or clearance than turn around a try to get a refund at Walmart or something. Then they (the scammers) are making money off of taking advantage of a business. Also, theives will steal merchandise and then turn around and return it for money. Freaking crooks!

From Target, Walmart or BRU's standpoint, I can see them losing a lot of money if they returned everything at full price. Would it be fair to get full refund, if you knowingly bought it on sale or clearance?

I don't work for the retail business whatsoever but that's why I keep almost all of my receipts for this reason. If I lose a receipt, it's my own fault. Actually, DH hates that I keep all of my receipts. I like having it just in case I have to return something. Also, I have had a server at a restaurant charge more tip then what I wrote. (I gave them my usual 20% tip but I guess they didn't think it was enough) I noticed something off when I checked my bank account.

I have worked in retail in the past (a long long time ago) and there are a lot of scammers out there trying to make money. I know it's not fair for people like us who are innocent and would never try to get more money back than we deserve but they (Target, BRU, Walmart) are a business trying to protect themselves.

@Mrsbells: @MRS. LEMON-LIME: unless the manager said specifically 60%, it's unfortunately probably just chance that the lowest price they'll give is that amount. Any time I've returned without a receipt its generally always what I expect..at the least, 20% off because they often give coupons for that. But if they had a sale on those wipes within x amount of days for $5.99, that's what they'll give you, unless you can prove you paid more. Sucks, but not all companies have the same policy :/

Not that I find it fair, but I worked at toys r us and the reason being is that if you can't prove what you paid, you get lowest selling price in last 90 days. From a store standpoint, people buy at discount and return for full price, making money and the store loses money. Some people ruin it for everyone.

@Crumbs: If you don't have a receipt at Target, even if the item was purchased off your registry, they give you a very hard time about it. They swipe your driver's license, and once you hit a limit of returns within a year (which isn't very high), they won't accept any more returns from you.
It's especially annoying because they are terrible about keeping registries up to date, so if something is purchased and they don't mark it as purchased and someone else purchases a duplicate, they still refuse to return the duplicate even though it's their fault you got a duplicate.

@Mrsbells: For Target, they are supposed to accept returns for anything from your registry. Have them print off a purchase log for you. I was thold that will help.

I've been able to return items to BRU and just have them look up my account. I checked their returns policy online, and it says nothing about 60%. Check to see if they item is on sale that week though, because I think they do whatever the current shelf price is if you don't have a receipt that shows what was paid. If the cashier is being lame about it (can't prove you bought it here, etc) speak to a manager. Obviously if something is a store brand, you got it from them.
