We have always been on a feeding schedule more or less, but at 6.5 months we have loosened it up because she is really grazing like your LO. It seems like other babies will drink 5-6 oz at a time but she is usually done at 3 oz, and then hungry again soon. I'd rather get her to drink as much as she can during the day than worry about a feeding schedule honestly because I want to night wean!

@QBbride: I think it may be personality as well bc J has been like this since day 1. The dive-bombing is new but he's always been insistent, what mom you can't read my mind?!? He's also a boobaholic and would stay latched on 24-7 if I'd allow it. Now he gets distracted so he'll pop off look around and then want it back, it makes nursing in public a pain. :)

@jetsa: good to know. I guess he never really does that since he probably doesn't get that hungry. I never meant to feed on a schedule, but it just developed into a routine of nursing after wakings. I'm afraid if I tried to switch it up, he wouldn't nap well because he'd decide to wake up wanting a milk feed in the middle of his nap!

@QBbride: @Foodnerd81: my LO freaks out if he's hungry and I'm not feeding him and then he'll start dive-bombing whatever shirt I'm wearing to get the point across. I'm told not having a bottle ready quick enough is the only time he is unconsolable at daycare.

we are mostly scheduled.... LO just weaned last week (I ran out of milk) so he is also 7.5 months and on solids and formula. He has around 3 meals a day (around 4oz of puree each meal and maybe something bigger to gnaw on, but he doesn't get much from it) and 5 bottles of formula a day, spaced out evenly. Each bottle is around 4.5-5.5 oz. sometimes he'll leave some in the bottle, other times he'll need a little extra here and there :)

I miss nursing!! *sob*

@Foodnerd81: we have pretty much the exact same schedule and I have the same question! Like I have no idea what "demanding" what look like since I just offer the boob after his naps. Sometimes I feel like he'd go the whole day without demanding the boob but he'll happily feed if I offer.

I never meant to not nurse on demand,, but I guess we are more on a schedule now. Usually our day goes something like:
7 am breastfeed
10:30-11 ish (wake up from nap) breastfeed
12:30-1 ish- solids lunch
3:30-4 (whenever she wakes up from nap 2) breastfeed
6- solids dinner
7- breastfeed

How do you know when they want to nurse? Just fussiness? Now that we naturally came to this schedule I feel like it's more rare that she insists on nursing, more like I know it's about time for it. There have been a handful of times where she did nurse off schedule after being fussy for no other reason I could figure out. If I offer off the schedule she usually only nurses for a few minutes and keeps popping off.

LO is 10 months, and he gets four 7 oz bottles a day. I space them out so he gets one about every 4-5 hours or so. He was getting 5-6 bottles a day, but we cut down around 8 months or so. He also gets 3 meals a day and some snacks here and there. He's not big on drinking a lot of water, so the bottles are keeping him hydrated!

@illumina: My LO is older---she'll be 10 months in a week. But we give her bottles on a schedule now. Her Ped actually recommended cutting from 6 to 5 bottles a day at 7 months, 4 bottles a day at 9 months and 3 bottles a day after 10 months.

However, our LO isn't a big eater, so she can't drink large amounts in one sitting so we are *just* cut down to 5 bottles a day a week ago. We do pumped milk.

Her schedule is:

night feed after 2 am (4 oz)
solids breakfast at 7 am, followed by 5 oz bottle
11 am 5 oz bottle
1 pm solids lunch
3:30 pm 5 oz bottle
6:00 pm solids dinner
7 pm 5 oz bottle.

In a few more weeks, we're going to work on dropping the night feed, so then we'll be at 4 bottles a day, keeping the same day time schedule. Hopefully by then she'll be upping her solids intake to cover the missed bottle.

I nurse upon waking (AM, after morning and afternoon naps) and bedtime then feed solids between. I guess that's not really "on demand" but it seems to be a routine that works well for us. Mind you sometimes I wonder whether he's really "demand" to nurse... I just feed him then because it works!

We're basically the same. LO drinks a bottle before her naps and bedtime, so I know generally when those will be, but she's a snacker too, so I always have a bottle on hand for when she's hungry. Also, since we started solids, I have no idea how much she'll drink at any one sitting....sometimes 3 oz, sometimes 7 oz. Shes all over the place!

I still nurse on demand, and LO is almost 11 months old. But now that I know he can go longer without, I'm more likely to let him wait a bit, like if we're out in public or doing an activity. If he's really hungry or upset, though, and a cracker isn't doing the trick, he doesn't have to wait.

I'm curious. S is 7 1/2 months and whilst we do solids at breakfast and lunch, we still offer formula on demand throughout the day. When I hear others talking about their schedule they seem to have set times for the milk feeds. Wherever we go, we have to keep a bottle on hand because she'll drink 3oz here, 2oz there etc.

It's working really well for us at the moment, but I'm wondering if we should start moving towards something different?
