I believe there's some science that shows viruses have an easier time surviving in dryer air, plus it just makes it easier to breathe when it's not so dry. We're in VA, so once it starts getting warmer, our humidity hovers in the 60s on a good day and way higher otherwise so we only use it if it's dry. We both had a cold a few weeks ago and I know I felt a lot better sleeping in her room with the humidifier on- less sore throat and stuffy nose. The pediatrician said the extra moisture in the air would help with her colds, especially when they included a cough. A cool mist humidifier is often recommended if they cough at night. I often add a few drops of eucalyptus oil as well because it's supposed to help with the cough. I don't know "scientifically/medically" why but I swear it helps both my girls. "Need" is subjective, I know, but it's a common recommended tip on HB. </p> <p>I sleep with a humidifier about 10-15 times a year when I have a sore throat due to dryness (I live in AZ), but DH can't sleep with w/ a humidifier because between his asthma and tendency towards nasal polyps, humidifiers make it hard for him to breathe. It gives him congestion and a headache. I don't want to subject LO to the same thing..... </p>
