Check out the Sandpearl Resort in Clearwater, FL. We love that place. It’s a really easy flight down to Tampa and will be much less than Bermuda.

You could also consider Cape Cod. We go there pretty much every year. The beaches on the cape side are like bath water and super shallow a long ways out with almost no waves. But resorts can be expensive, most people rent houses. Though you’d save on airfare if you could drive.

@Waterbaby: I've been to the Marriott Singer Island three times now and it is always great. The first two times we rented through Marriott but this past August we found a VRBO and it was significantly cheaper but not as well maintained. It's great to have a condo type set-up (kitchen, laundry, 2 separate bedrooms, etc.) but also the hotel amenities (pool bar!, coffee shop, room service).

@LCTBQE: Also on my list for places to try is Seaside or Watercolor, Florida. We're thinking of renting a house there a year from August. So many great rentals on this site: https://www.360blue.com/ and some include golf carts, etc. You should go and tell me how it is!

@PurplePumps: I'm checking it out! thanks :)
@pinkb: cool, thank you so much for getting specific, that's very helpful. I really really dislike super crowded beaches, that's one thing I liked about Rosemary Beach--it wasn't jam-packed.

@Mrs. Toad: I think I'm too nervous to book without it.

@lamariniere: awesome, I'm going to have my husband research hotels there. always a lot of reasonable flights from NYC so it's great to keep in mind for future winter vacations, too.

@PinkElephant: seriously, who is spending that, mick jagger?!

@Mrs. Champagne: @charm55: ah, I've heard it's gorgeous but I want extreme heat and powdered sugar sand and palm trees :silly: plus my wonderful close friend is building a freaking gorgeous house on the coast of Maine right now and our other summer vacation is going to stay with her (for free!). some day!

@Waterbaby: thank you, adding it to the list to research :)

We’ve done Marriott Singer island with our son when he was 1 and again when he was 2. We love it! It has both a nice beach and 2 pools/ one with a big beach entry. The hotel staff are awesome and little things like valet and Starbucks in the lobby make it nice for people with kids. There are some good restaurants in the area but we really just use it as a nice, relaxing beach trip.

@LCTBQE: OMG that's outrageous!! We went sans kiddos (but definitely saw families, and thought it might be a nice place for a chill, beach centric vacation with the littles where we didn't try to do a lot of activities). That is not even remotely in my budget either, and while it was a pricier trip for two, we definitely didn't spend a per-night amount that would have made me guess they'd be asking such a wild amount for a family suite. Sorry!

So I would definitely check out Prince Edward Island. My kids were 3 and 1 (boy and girl) and we had an awesome time.

@LCTBQE: not at all! I had a lot of preconceived ideas about the Miami party scene before we went (it was the one and only time I’ve been), and they were all debunked! We stayed at a smaller boutique hotel right on the beach and it wasn’t loud or crazy. We mostly just hung out at the beach and pool and strolled up and down the main drag, but we did go to the acquarium, and we also rented a car for a day and went to somewhere in the Everglades (it’s been almost 8 years, so I can’t remember all the details!).

I don't know about beaches, but mid-August is when hurricane season starts to be busy. Peak is actually early September. However, I wouldn't go without travel insurance.

@LCTBQE: from Sarasota here :) I personally would avoid siesta key if you want a quieter beach experience. I would aim for Longboat key (just finishing replenishing the beach it's beautiful again) or Anna Maria. We do have the Ritz Carlton but also have a lot of new hotels that have opened. Most in the downtown area though. I would look for something like Longboat Key Club or a smaller place up that way. And I agree there are a lot of kid friendly activities here besides the beach too.
ETA. September seems to be when storms start to really get active but the insurance wouldn't be the worst idea ;) also SRQ airport just added a quite a few new flights so you might be able to fly right in to town.

@LCTBQE: we're staying at Fairmont Southhampton, not an all inclusive. It's much further north, so not in the usual hurricane path. We considered Aruba and Cancun too, but they ater longer or connecting, so we decided a direct 2.5 hr flight was the way to go since they are all nice. The hotels at Bermuda cost more, but the cheaper flights made up for it and the cost difference ended up being minimal for all. (We have 7 families going and i had a huge spread sheet for total flight and hotel cost for 2-4 people).

@PinkElephant: were you there on a baby moon sans DD's 1 and 2, or were they there with you? I just looked it up and it looks extraordinary, but the only room available per their website with two kids is $5000/night--yikes. not what I meant by "not a super tight budget", haha. Good to know that Aruba has a different vibe, sounds like not our scene as much!

@lindseykaye: great to know about the schools! that's exactly the week we're looking at (our daycare is closed for provider's vacation 8/12-16). I've been to Sarasota a few times and really liked it, and my best friend is from Dunedin--it's def on our radar. do you know of any nice places to stay that are not crazy loud obnoxious? :) and when are the storms more active if not mid-August, like later in the fall?

@PurplePumps: beat me to it. Bermuda is so easy from the NYC area - we stayed at Rosewood Tucker's Point when I was pregnant with DD3, but saw a number of families there. Very quiet; good pools, beach had gentle waves. You do use golf carts to get around the property, so you'd just need to be fine with that for transporting your LOs. It is not all inclusive and is on the pricier end, but if all-inclusive is what you want, I'm sure you could find that as well!

Aruba is also super easy; the vibe is very different (louder, younger, etc.) but the beaches are still nice and there are lots of types of property to choose from. There are a few small attractions that are great for young kids (butterfly farm, donkey sanctuary), but other than that, you can just relax! And we found a number of options for suites, which is helpful travelling with little kids.

Hurricanes aren’t as active as you might think for Florida in August (at least for the last several years) so that is something you may not have to worry much about. Also FL schools return 8/12 so you may be able to enjoy fewer crowds around then.

The gulf coast of FL is pretty much what you’re asking for. I’m from the Sarasota area and can’t recommend it enough for a beach destination. Powder white sand, calm clear water, and lots of options for non-beach kid friendly activities. There’s a thread out there with some activity recommendations if you end up looking closer at it as an option.
You can fly into Tampa and drive the rest of the way or if you’re able there is a small airport that may work for your flight options. Even closer to Tampa airport is St. Petersburg. Another very lovely destination with plenty of beach resort options of all styles.

Have fun!

I don’t know about hurricanes, but we went to Miami when my oldest was about 18 months, I think we went in July. The water where we were was perfect, fairly shallow, no waves, and warm. But it was just a regular hotel, not a resort.

@PurplePumps: cool, I didn't realize hurricanes were less of an issue there! are you staying at an all-inclusive resort place? (or are they all like that in Bermuda?) we were thinking loosely about going there or maybe Key West, which I realize is directly in the path of 100% of hurricanes :)

My son will be 11 months in Aug and we're going to Bermuda! Far enough north that its not in the hurricane path of the Caribbean, and a quick direct flight from Boston, and I'm sure NYC has direct flights too. I've never been, but I've heard its beautiful and there are lots of calm beaches.

We're looking at taking a weeklong beach trip this August--our girl will be turning 1 and our boy will be turning 3. We are in the NYC area and I'd like a short-ish flight, ideally just a direct flight but I'd be okay with a quick two-leg.

Required: nice beach with gentle waves (like, not the Atlantic coast), pool, beach hopefully not jam-packed with people. We could spend a little, we're not really on a tight budget. We went to Rosemary Beach two years ago and thought it was perfectly nice and totally fit the bill for above, but wondering what else is out there. We haven't typically been all-inclusive types (my husband and I always found nice boutique hotels pre-kids) but I'm not averse if everyone agrees they're awesome with young kids.

Thoughts? Where have you been that you loved?? Also, I know it's prime hurricane season, so I guess we'd get travel insurance.
