I think it's just a preference issue and not at all inappropriate for those who choose to bikini!

@Mrsbells: I think there's just the perception of more sex offenders now, because statistics show those crimes actually decreasing.

I'm not really sure. I can see how they are more convenient for diaper changes. However, my biggest pet peeve is when girls are dressed to look cute rather than for play. Obviously there are 2-piece swimsuits that a girl can run, jump, swim, splash around in (@mrsjacks). And when they are babies they are doing too much of that anyway.
If we have a girl, I"ll probably do one of the t-shirt style tops with bottoms (to allow for easy diaper changes, but to protect from the sun).
And I Just prefer one-pieces for girls who want to swim & play- I can remember when I made the switch to a two-piece at around age 12, and was pretty horrified to discover I had to be more cautious about canon-balls and body surfing, or else I'd lose my top!

Basically, seems like personal preference. But I'm personally in the one-piece camp.

I think 10 or 20 years ago it would have been ok, but these days with all the child sex offenders out there, i would want to keep my child looking like a child as long as possible.
Some two piece bathing suits are ok for babies, because they look baby-ish, but this one looks like an adult bikini and I would never put my baby in that.

Lala has a yellow bikini. The only difference is that the top is straight across (so no implications of a bust) and the bottom is a ruffled yellow skirt. I've only ever gotten compliments on it and I don't think it's inappropriate. I do think the pose she put the baby in is kind of inappropriate.

I definitely don't find it inappropriate, that term seems to put a sexual spin on it...I do think it's kind of silly though since babies don't have boobs so why the need for a bikini top? That seems like unnecessary modesty to me. In France most babies and little girls run around in just bikini bottoms on the beach or a one-piece but that is more rare.

@sorrycharlie: I agree. At first we had a rash guard for sun protection. We were super careful until a year but then we were given some one pieces and a two piece longish halter suit. I put it on LO today just for inside the house and taught her to say the word bikini. She loves wearing that thing!!

@HabesBabe: Cute!

As for crocheted bikini, no one really goes swimming in a crocheted anything, do they? It's a picture prop like all the cute crocheted hats on Etsy. It's not like the baby was at the beach or anywhere near water.

I'd rather a bikini than trying to peel a soaking wet one-piece off my kid every time they need a diaper change. That being said, I might steer clear of the silver hologram string bikinis...

I thought the way they tried to pose her was a little weird.

I do feel that they shouldn't be coming down on JS for the picture, but ...she shared it. Ya know?

That said, I think baby 2-pieces are cute, but I probably won't use one unless someone buys it for us. I'd rather use a rash guard and a swim diaper for better sun protection, but that's just my view! I don't particularly care if others put their babies in bikinis.

Wow, this is a pretty split issue! Personally seeing a baby in a bikini wouldn't bother me, although I do think it's impractical for a baby and I probably wouldn't buy one, I don't think Jessica really should have gotten so much heat for it.

When it comes to the sexualization of little ones, I agree with pps that its ok for babies to go around with no shirt, so the bikini top isnt a big deal. I did have a problem with the padded bikini tops that Abercrombie and Fitch kids had for little girls 6 and up a little while back. I think that is very inappropriate why try to make a 6 year old look like she has boobs?

I think it's cute! It was crocheted, maybe if it was a shiny black spandex or something, then it would be weird. But honestly, all this criticism makes me wonder what ppl would say when they see just-in-a-diaper newborn pictures? Technically the baby's naked then ...

@Foodnerd81: Totally makes sense! One of the first things I thought of when we found out we were having a girl was getting her a cute swimsuit and sunglasses and picturing DH with her in the water:) If I lived elsewhere, that would definitely not have occurred to me or would seem unnecessary. Plus I don't even walk the dog without SPF 50 on my face. I wear it under my makeup every day. She'll probably be slathered in spf 90. But it's a big part of our life...I love hanging by the pool and relaxing with DH:)

@jholler25: I actually do think always being on or near the water has something to do with it. I live in New England. Our skin doesn't see the light of day for 8 months out of the year, so being in a bikini feels and looks like a LOT of skin, to me at least (on a grown up). So a bikini feels really exposed to me when I wear one or see one. I think if I personally was super comfortable in a bikini, then seeing littler girls in one wouldn't look as weird, maybe? Does that make sense?

I voted inappropriate, but I really just think that it is really stupid to put a bikini on, if the wearer doesn't have a pair of developed breasts.

Also, I think it is important to protect your baby from the sun, and not expose their skin more than is necessary at the pool/beach etc.
