i just wrote in another thread that L was biting me after he got his 2 bottom teeth but seemed to stop after about a week. I didn't know what to do to discourage it exactly, but i instinctively would unlatch him and say "no biting" and take a break before nursing again. it seems to line up with the advice given here and has worked for me.

I told him no earlier and the little booger laughed at me! This is definitely going to be a work in progress.

@matador84: that's what I do. I take her off and tell her she's done. I put her off to the side.

My LO got me real good by dragging me across her new bottom teeth. She's gotten better but I'm not fond of nursing a baby shark. Ouch!

One other thing to consider is that if you have an interesting reaction, assuming it doesn't scare them, they might do it more because they like the result. I've found that being very matter-of-fact and calm (so I use my regular voice and say something like, "You can nurse again when you're not biting."), and discontinuing the nursing for a moment or two usually stops it. With my kids it's typically been teething-related. Biting is no fun!

I'm still nursing W and he's almost 15 months old and has 8 teeth. They get the point if you keep popping them off.

Subscribing as I'm having the same issue! Dd has two bottom teeth and bites me all the time. Nothing I've tried to discourage the biting has been successful :(

I still nurse and DS has 6 teeth. I pull him off and tell him NO firmly and kind of put him to the side. He gets this really serious sad look on his face...it is crazy, but worked so far!

Unlatch. Say please don't bite mommy. Re latch.

If he kept doing it I would stop nursing him in that moment (read a book, offer solids, something) and try again in like a half hour.

DS just got his first tooth this past week. He's bitten down a few times while nursing. Ouch! What can I do to discourage it?
