Damnit....I was so looking forward to using the bjorn.....And I still will but not all the time...I think i'll alternate carriers.

Is 3.5m too big for a wrap?

@regberadaisy: Yea! Not only that, look at the dad. If you were walking with the bjorn, you would be hitting the kids legs that are dangling there.

@Mrsdaredevil: Yeah the wider bottom and different shape so the baby is sitting rather than dangling

I think when they are very young its not as big deal because babies are so flexible right out of the womb but as they get older and less flexible, the ergo is much better as it allows them to sit naturally

I do worry though about using the ergo now because I feel like my 4 month old isnt comfortable with her legs that wide apart. I will try it again today and see if its any better than it was 2 weeks ago

If a full priced Ergo isn't in your budget check Craigslist, I've seen some on there that are pretty reasonable. We still use our Ergo with DD (28m but only 25lbs) so depending upon how big you LO is you will can get some good mileage out of it whereas most Bjorns are only comfortable up to about 15lbs.

I just sent a message to a friend who was using an Ergo incorrectly (on front but facing out) because of concern for the baby's hips/legs.

@Mrsdaredevil: Yes, in the carriers like the ergo, they actually "sit" on their bum and the legs go out to the side. The Bjorn is called the crotch dangler because they just kinda hang in there.

Here is a picture from

@Mrsdaredevil: yeah the bottom of the Ergo is much wider than that of the Bjorn. And if you read a post mrs. jacks wrote about carrying she explains the natural positioning of the baby's legs is wider like the Ergo allows versus the Bjorn which dangles it more.

@regberadaisy: Yes, this is why we went with the Ergo. I put a 2 year old in it and could easily carry her around. Its very adjustable.

@Mrsdaredevil: The baby bjorn doesnt support them in the correct sitting position and can cause problems in their hip development.

I agree with everyone else that the baby gets really heavy in the Baby Bjorn and you can't use it for that long. Since your LO is already 3.5 months, you might as well get the Ergo to last you longer.

@regberadaisy: I should add that I'm pretty short (5'1") and both kids are in the 90th+ percentile for height. So pretty early on they were tall enough that their feet were hitting my thighs and knees in the Bjorn. The way the Ergo carries, though, their legs go out to side, so our differences in height aren't as much of an issue!

@Honeybee: thanks for your perspective! Didn't realize it didn't last as long. So I might be investing in a Ergo in the future any way.

Our dcotor said as long as we don't use the Baby Bjorn for extended periods of time, it's fine. I've used it with both kids, but they do grow out of it faster than the Ergo. DD was about 6/7 months when I had to stop wearing her in the Bjorn because she was too tall; and I stopped with DS with he turned 4 months because of his height. However, I can still put DD in the Ergo (at 26 months), so it's much longer lasting.

I have an ergo and a baby bjorn. I use the baby bjorn for short periods of time, but I think as baby gets heavier then its better to use a carrier like ergo that lets them sit in a comfortable position. The only reason I use the baby bjorn now is because LO is still a bit small for the ergo and I dont like using it wit the infant insert

My BFF is giving me a moby wrap, her ergo, and her baby bjorn. I plan to use all three depending on the situation. I understand the risks of the baby bjorn but as long as we aren't using it constantly I really don't think it's a big deal. I just think there will be situations where the baby would prefer to be looking out so they can engage with their surroundings and the bjorn allows for that.

Is there a point where it's not an issue anymore? Is it just when they're newborn?
My SIL gave me her old Bjorn -like 7 years old- and M is now 3.5months old. Wondering if it'll be OK to use it? My husband really likes it.

I was thinking of buying a ErgoBaby but if we don't have to spend the money it would be great.

Thoughts?
