@GoGoSnoGirl: I sort of tend to agree. I guess I don't know that it should be disallowed... but I sort of wonder.. why? It seems SO risky and undoubtedly expensive (so I can't imagine cost of surrogacy or adoption was the issue). I can understand wanting to carry a child, but to put your child at that sort of risk for your desire seems a bit off to me.

Science FTW! They do transplants with so many other organs, why not?!

It is really something that never crossed my mind as being a possibility. I think that anything that can give hope to a women unable to have children is great to be explored but this does seem really risky. I think just knowing how delicate organ transplanting is, and how often bodies reject new organs, ect I think surrogacy still seems like the safest route for mom and baby. But very happy for this happy ending.

I thought maybe she just had a uterus transplant (although I guess you don't need one so that's random if you don't want a baby) but the idea of doing a transplant just to carry a child in said uterus seems so risky to me. And then it seems like they're treating it like a throw away organ. Like after the child was delivered, hope it's good for the next round kind of thing. I think modern medicine is amazing but this seems extreme to experiment mother and baby with.

I think it is amazing! Some women are really not ok with surrogacy or adoption, and really yearn to carry their own child. Besides, there is no way to know how your own body will react to carrying a baby. Tons of women have multiple miscarriages, preterm deliveries etc with no risk factors, so I don't see why we should limit uterine transplants. Pregnancy is a risk, even to the healthiest woman, and we don't put restrictions on who can and can't carry their infants usually.

I think what I don't like about this admittedly amazing medical breakthrough, is that now they've involved the life of an innocent baby. I'm not ok with that. There are so many other options, and they had no way to know whether the transplanted womb would function properly beyond the year (or less?) of the woman simply getting her period. Growing a baby is not easy... as many women here can attest to. To actively put a fetus into this risky position isn't necessary, I don't think. I am happy for them & I'm also usually all for most medical advancement, but this just seems a little too much.

Wow! That's crazy! I guess the woman really wanted to carry her child vs having a surrogate? I'm amazed by the capabilities of modern medicine.
