It's encouraging to see that so many of our LOs are in the same basic range for words and communication. I try not to get crazy on milestone comparing but I wanted to have a general picture of what's normal. I know all children have their own time too. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: interesting.. my DS can say 5ish words at 12 months and isn't walking. He walks with his push toy but thats it. The pedi wasn't concerned about him not walking yet and neither am I. But it's interesting that they focus on one or the other. I never thought of it like that.

@MrsMccarthy: I think I should clarify at least that next week he will be 16 months. And from other people's comments, and previous experience, it does seem to come in bursts! Also there are some words he will learn and use and then not use them for weeks. Bug for example he used this summer a lot then suddenly, I haven't heard it in like a month. I guess we don't get outside enough !

Sounds right on track with my toddler boy who just turned 15 months last week, maybe even ahead. He has about 7 words (though a couple of them are SO off from what they should be, like Elmo = Bo), but his receptive language is also excellent.

We went through the full EI assessment at 13 months for delayed crawling and I can tell you they scored LO at 100% for communication skills because of his receptive language and his eye contact with adults. (I was shocked because I thought he was behind because he wasn't saying much at all at that point.) I asked them when they look for the "word explosion" and she said somewhere around 19-21 months. So if you're really worried, you could definitely call, but at least in NJ, it's very unlikely he would qualify for any services at this point. Nor do I think he sounds like he needs any - sounds like a typical boy:)

my 16 month old has 6 or 7 "words" (in some cases, just noises that mean something). his receptive language is fine, he knows where most of his facial features and body parts are, he knows some colours, he can pick up and pass specific things when I ask. I'm not worried at all! the nurse didn't seem concerned at all either, she seemed to think receptive language is much more important at this age!

Jake is much like T, physically ahead of the curve but not verbally. J is now starting to talk a little more but still just uses 5-7 core words, we have to really work to get him to say more but he does understand what they mean so I try not to worry too much :-)

Our pedi said she likes to see 2-3 words at 15 months and 8-10 at 18 months, and that in her experience early walkers are more likely to have slight verbal delays. She also said she was more concerned with receptive language. E is 16 months and has 4-5, but has a very strong receptive language.

Ellie had less than that at 15 months and was also slow/delayed on physical milestones (other than fine-motor) and she was using the word, "languish," correctly in a sentence by age three. I definitely always recommend getting evaluated by EI if you have any concern-- mostly to allay your own worries and not because there is anything to be worried about. I think T is doing great. All kids are just so different and really do seem to have their own timetables for these things.

My LO had his 18 month appt today - he says about 10-15 words right now, his receptive language is pretty good. His doctor was not concerned as she said it's normal for them to say 10-20 words at this age, by age 2 they should be up to 50 words. He has started to try and repeat much more of what we say just in the past week so I'm not worried - I feel like in the next month or so he'll be saying more words.

@MrsMccarthy: that sounds like he knows a lot of words! My DD can say mama, dada, hi, uh oh, bubble, ball and kitty and she is 16 months this week. I noticed her understanding a lot more instructions and words in the past 2 weeks. She all of a sudden started pointing to head, nose, ears, toes, hair, belly, etc. I didn't vote in your poll since we have a girl :-)

@Mamasig: I have read that bilingual children are definitely processing a lot more so sounds like he is on track.

@winniebee: wow sounds like a lot can happen in a short time.

@Sammyfab: oh that's probably why. Our US system works a bit faster I think.

@sarbear: sounds good! :)

@Mrs. Bee: yeah I think they work much faster in Portland Oregon as well. I think we are still very much in a grey area.

@lemondrop: oh boy do I love hearing how much progress can happen in a short time. Lost count huh? That's excellent!!!

@Running Elley: what a little dynamo he is. E has been on the earlier side for everything. I wonder how his sister will match him. all children are so different. Tor crawled early and walked at 9 months but he is finding language a bit trickier.

@shinymama: 8 words seems like a lot to me! Plus he is bilingual!!! Impressive.

DS has 8 words, but like your son, his receptive language is great. If anything I think DS is a little on the slower verbal side for two major reasons: 1) we're a bilingual household, and 2) he's the baby who everyone coddles and who's needs tend to always be anticipated. {We need to stop that.}

@mrskc: my son had an explosion at 15 months so a lot can happen in a few weeks I tell ya. It's encouraging to see that Tor is on track with a lot of other babies.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: wow! Yes I have heard that too and my son has always been ahead in gross and fine motor skills.

@jmarionsmith: wow 11 is impressive!! I know some baby girls who have a ton of words and my friends son had a bit more and was just a chattier kid at 15 months but I know it varies. I mostly just want a general idea so I know if I should contact EI or something.

@banana: I am so glad to hear you have a chatterbox on your hands now. Your speech tips were very helpful to us.

@Mrs. Bee: wow! So much can happen in a months time. My husbands mother said my husband and his twin sister were late talkers but when they started talking they were combining words so its like they were just holding out. Language is such an interesting thing. It seems to be different for everyone.

@cascademom: yeah 18 months is our next ped appointment and that's kind of my deadline to call EI if he seems a bit lagged. He is picking up a lot lately so I hope he retains it.

It sounds like he's doing great!!!

In speaking with 5-6 different speech-language pathologists, the range of 'normal' for expressive language is soooo broad at this age. Receptive language is a much bigger concern and it sounds like Tor is right on target. If you are the slightest bit concerned though, I highly suggest you pursue EI now. I put my son on the waitlist for EI at 16 months because the wait is ~6 months long and I wanted to have him assessed around age 2.

He sounds perfectly normal. LO is almost 16 months old and speaking about in the same range. LO knows Spanish words as well. Our daycare ladies are schooling us on those, but he knows them in addition to his English words. LO's main words are dog, mama, dada, Wow, Uh-Oh, yes, no at 16 months. I think he's close to a language explosion. According to our literature from our peds, 18 months is when he adds more words. LO also can point to toes, nose, and ears. He likes noses, so ours get a workout from him.

I think T's on track with language based on his age.
