@mrs. wagon: oh my. I'm so glad we're having a girl so I don't have to deal with this! That's a great solution, though.

I never had this problem consistently, DS peed on the shower curtain once and that was it. I don't use wipes, but I use warm water on a washcloth to clean him up, so maybe that has something to do with it.

We had that problem for the first month, after that no real problems unless I leave the diaper off for too long- he shot my laptop keyboard once...

He also peed through multiple outfits a day for the first month or so, but that stopped soon too, now it is just occasional.

Sawyer had a lot of open air accidents that stopped at around 3 weeks of age. Now I even leave the clean diaper open for ~5 minutes at the end of every diaper change because he LOVES being naked and getting air!

I open his diaper exposing him to the air for a few seconds and then I cover him back up to see if he pees. Then I put a wipe on it while I use another one to wipe him down. I haven't had too many issues, unless he's peeing as I open his diaper the first time...that's always fun lol

We would throw a washcloth over it. But we also found that this is something he grew out of fairly quickly, unless it was really cold where we were changing him.

This was a huge problem for us in the beginning. Those ridiculous peepee teepees were obviously invented by someone who never dealt with a squirmy baby boy.

This is the ONLY way to do it: every time you're going to change him, you have to get him to pee first. So open the diaper (but keep it in place), open the front, blow on his weewee, and when you see the fountain starting, quickly close the diaper again and let the diaper soak up the pee. Then you can go ahead and freely change him.

Sometimes we'd swipe a cold wipe across his weewee and that would start the fountain. And sometimes we wouldn't have to do anything, just open the diaper and he'd start.

After that stopped working I just kept another diaper on hand, folded outwards, and kept it over his crotch area as much as possible.

DS would always pee when we opened his diaper in the first few weeks! We covered his bits with a washcloth during changes. Now @ 3.5 months it happens rarely so we never cover him...although he managed to spray me after his bath tonight!

Hahahahahaha! Changing DS is such a different experience from what I went through with DD; I had accidents multiple times a day for the first few weeks of DS's life! I think diapering/toileting a boy is the most challenging part, so far. (Granted, I'm only a couple months in).

What I do now is open up his diaper and then loosely recover him with it for a minute or two. The cool air hits, but if he starts to pee, he's still covered and I don't get sprayed. Doing that has cut down on the number of accidents by quite a bit.

Lol, I have no advice because I have a girl. She went through a phase where she'd always pee the second I opened her diaper. But it wasn't an issue luckily.

When I was babysitting my nephew, after the first sprinkling (he managed to get his own head and the wall behind him!) I would put a wipe over the front while I wiped the back. By the time it came to wipe around the front, he would have already peed if he was going to. Kind of wasteful, I guess, so probably a burp cloth or something would be better.

Have you tried a wipe warmer? Word on the street is that the reason they start peeing is because of the temperature change. We don't usually have this issue, but I have a pre-fold diaper sitting on the table in case he starts I can just throw it over him so it doesn't make a huge mess!

@winniebee: Yeah right after I posted that I went to read the reviews on Amazon which basically says it is useless. Ha I just thought they were cute when I'd see them at baby showers. What about a washcloth?

We didn't really have this problem often but my sister did. What worked for them was to put a space heater near the changing table and point it towards baby boy. That way the cold air isn't nearly as effecting as it might be otherwise.

How do I cut down on the number of open air accidents?? Lately, pretty much every time I change DS, he pees on himself (even though he already has a wet diaper). This results in more crying, an outfit change, etc. I have tried to undo the diaper and wait a bit to change him, but the moment I remove it or start wiping him down, he pees!

Any suggestions??
