I haven't used it, but I seriously looked at a kelty carrier at a kids resale shop this week. All I can attest to was that it looked well used, but all the straps, buckles, fabric, everything was still in awesome shape and still very sturdy.

We have taken long hikes with the Ergo (worn on the back) and have been fine with it (Ergo performance in particular). HOWEVER, there is a new carrier that debuted at Outdoor Research last summer that I'm really excited about. Check out the Poco Plus carrier. We tried it out at OR and actually volunteered to model for them. (We were modeling for Ergo at the time).

We have the deuter. Our LO really likes riding in it. My husband is the one who usually carries our LO when we use it. We have never done a super long hike though. We recently went snowshoeing with it for 2+ hours. Our LO even fell asleep in it during the hike. I would think for a long hike, the hiking packs are probably more comfortable for the child. They have a bit more wiggle room and child won't get overheated as they are not against your body (assuming you'll be hiking in warm weather).
I have carried LO for multiple days of site seeing in our ergo as well and that worked fine but he was only 6 months at the time.

I haven't gone hiking with our LO. I can see an ergo working if you wear your LO on your back..
I found this site http://www.babycarriers168.com/hiking-baby-carrier.htm
I think you should definitely get something with a canopy to shield your LO from the sun.

No personal experience, but my parents hiked with me in a backpack from Marmot (in Berkeley) --through the Alps.
And I'm sure they're all better made now.

We love wearing LO. We currently use an ergo. We're heading to Yellowstone NP this summer and plan on taking quite a few long hikes (8+ miles). Anyone have a recommendations for a hiking-style carrier? We're thinking possibly a Kelty or a Deuter...Or, if you're a hiker, have you had a good experience using a soft structured carrier, like the ergo, for long hikes?
