@Alba4: definitely feet out! I bet that would help a lot. He's a big boy I'm surprised you could keep his feet in there.

@oliviaoblivia: thanks for the tips! I'm going to try putting his feet out too!

I always get compliments on the wrap. I think the colors are so pretty!

@Alba4: yes! I'd try to get it more over your shoulder and get him up a little bit higher. There looks like there is a little bit of slack (by your hand) in the middle. Tightening that up just a little bit will give home more support and take some strain away from you.
Overall it does look pretty good though. I have the same one!

@oliviaoblivia: I didn't have complications, but my ab strength is non-existent (which may be the reason for back pain). He was 9lbs 11 oz, and the birth itself was harder than my first. I was on modified bedrest this most recent pregnsncy, so in general I'm weaker than last PP.

I'll take a photo later today when I'm home from work! I'd love to keep using the Maya ring sling, since it's my favorite (before this back pain started). If I can make it fit better, that might help! Thanks everyone!

I recommend the Lillebaby carrier, you don't need an insert! Works great with dd who is about 12 lbs.

For at least six months my core strength was zilch, and I could not get comfortable in the ring sling, even with professional fitting. My back just wouldn't tolerate it. I did a lot better with my connecta (a buckle mei tei) and my Lenny lamb mei tai.

@Alba4: I know what it is, I have two Maya ring slings. My youngest is about 23 pounds and I barely feel her weight when she's in my ring slings. I'd bet we can get a better fit for you.
Did you have any birth complications that would make wearing uncomfortable?

I really love Mei Tais. They give you a lot of the benefits of a wrap but they're easier to put on. You could also try a buckle carrier that doesn't need an insert. The Beco Gemini doesn't, and I think Lillebaby doesn't either.

The ring sling definitely has a learning curve. Post a pic and we can help you adjust the fit

@avivoca: I tried just the pillow yesterday, but he cried after a few minutes. He has s very long torso and short legs. Maybe that's why the Ergo is uncomfortable? I'll try again today since maybe he just has to get used to it!

@oliviaoblivia: I'll try to post a pic later. Maybe I'm calling my Maya wrap by the wrong name since it isn't a wrap at all, but instead a ring sling. The fact that it only goes on 1 shoulder is what hurts my back so much. I don't think you can wear it in any other position.

I'd look at adjusting your fit with the ring sling first if that's what he's most comfortable in. He'll have the head control for the ergo in a few weeks so I would rush to buy another carrier unless you want another of course! 😉
If you do want another if look into a woven wrap. You'll get use out of it for a long time and can use different carries to get more support. It sounds like he likes cuddles and wovens do cuddles best.
My girls are enormous babies and almost exclusively wear them in ring slings as newborns. I wore my oldest comfortable in a Maya while 35 weeks pregnant when she was 28lbs.
Can you post a picture of how you're using it?

My lo was huge and I found the woven wrap to be really great. It spread his weight across my back really well and he loved it.

I also started using my Tula without the insert sometime around 3 or 4 months, but lo was really tall so his legs fit early and his head control was good.

Have you tried just using the pillow to boost him up instead of the whole insert? I hate that infant insert but the pillow made my baby happy. If you want a wrap, try a woven for more structure and support.

I need recommendations for a carrier. My 3 month old is a big, heavy baby (probably @17-18 lbs) so wearing him in my Maya wrap is killing my back. I have an original Ergo, but the baby insert is not working for us. My DS cries every time I put him in it, but he loves the Maya. Any recommendations to get me through the next few months until he has better neck control? Thanks!
