It's a little tricky because each brand goes by their own measurement, so it's hard to compare based on the age on the label, it's best to look at actual measurement guidelines. My 10 week, 10 pounder is barely able to wear 0-3 month items without them sagging off her little shoulders. It really depends on your niece's shape. If she's short and chunky, 6-12 months might be just fine. But if she's anything like my string bean, I'm willing to bet the 3-6 will still be a fine fit, come Thanksgiving.
