I really love the gowns-they're super easy when you have to change a diaper and they're easy to get on and off! I bought a couple of Gap "up to 7 pounds" gowns at a consignment sale and they were life savers when LO was first born, and she can still fit into them (and she's just over 10 pounds). At first I thought I would regret buying them because they were so small (and I thought I was going to have a 10 pound baby) but 11 weeks later and she can still wear them! They also have little snaps at the neck which is awesome, because it gives you two ways to put the gown on them (either slide it up, or pull it over the head)

Oh, and just an FYI, some brands fit differently-I found that gerber (for instance) ran small (0-3 month onesies fit more like a newborn).

I struggle with this because I have a hard time predicting how big she'll be during certain seasons or really even what the weather will be like during those seasons. My favorite things I've been gifted are mostly short sleeves because I know I can add a long sleeve onesie underneath or put a sweater on top. I also like skirts because I can put tights or leggings under it.

@cvbee good to know! my friend just had a girl and has soooo much cute, soft clothing. i have a friend who just put away her NB clothes and the baby is 4 months! we do have a lot of gift cards too. :-)

i want to try and find some of the longer onesies or gowns where the sleeves can be folded over so they don't scratch their face.

I say 0-3 and 3-6 too. I think it looks cute when the newborns have the over-size outfits on, so I had no issue with dressing LO in 0-3 right from the start. And you might want to do lots of skin-to-skin time as a NB anyways, and just wrap them in blankets in-between.

I just put away the 0-3 outfits last week, at 11 weeks.

Even though everyone knew we were having a boy, lots of people continued to gift us clothing after the baby was born, so I suspect that you might get a ton of clothes still from people who aren't asking what size you need.

Thanks girls!! This is so helpful. I feel like I have looked at a million different guides to layettes, and just couldn't decide what else I needed more of. I hate doing laundry, so it looks like I'll invest in more NB and 0-3!

I would get more newborn, 0-3, and 3-6. My LO was only in newborn clothes for 2 weeks.... but still I didn't want to be doing laundry every day during those two weeks so it was nice to have a good amount of clothes.

I would get more Newborn and 0-3 stuff. It's true that they grow out of it pretty fast but with spit up and whatnot we changed outfits a few times a day and I preferred having a bunch so I didn't have to worry about doing laundry so often.

I have found sleepers to be my favorite thing for lo. It's been hit as all get out here in NC but we have the a/c on. At night we sleep with blankets. So, we put lo into a sleeper and then swaddle her to make sure she's warm enough. I would definitely suggest more sleepers. We didn't use much more than that and onesies this first month.

I would suggest getting a few more newborn ones and don't wash them yet. Wash one or two of each size so you're ready when you bring her home. Then figure out what size you need. I had a 7.3lb baby but she's so long, at 4 weeks, she has already blown out of some brands of newborn sleepers.

As for detergent, we use All Free and Clear. We use it for our laundry and hers.

Regular detergent the whole time. We do use a fragrance free, sensitive skin kind (all free and clear) but we never had any trouble. It is really nice to throw in some of her clothes with ours or vice versa!

I totally can't decide if I want to take tags off and wash or leave tags on. I'm pretty lazy and doubt I will return much stuff at all...maybe I will take all tags off this week and get to washing!

Did you use dreft on LO clothing or just regular detergent?

@lydg: i was so skeptical about the newborn sized stuff too but it was all gift or hand me down. My lo was 8 lbs 2 oz but took a little while to get back to her birthweight so we used the newborn stuff up to 2 months mixed with 0-3 so i felt like it was worth it.

We are in arizona so even the winter isnt super cold but since newborns hae hard times with temperatures it still might ben nice to have sleepers.

You could leave tags on maybe but i liked having everythin washed and ready before she showed up.

@mamacate thanks for the help! he is due 8/27. and i live in texas so you never know with the weather! we have 4 distinct seasons, and fall is usually pretty mild. i am thinking along the same lines as you with more newborn stuff...it is just so hard because i have some friends whose babies wore NB for 3 months, and another who just had a baby monday (i'd say about average size, almost 8 lbs) and is wearing 0-3. I guess keep tags on so I can return if needed??

It seems like you have a good range of things. When is LO due? We had a winter baby so we really used a lot of sleepers or sleep andplays at the beginning. I think we had about 7? After that, some will depend on your style and what you want for LO. We do a lot of onesies because they are cute and easy but i have friends who do more complicated outfits.

You might want some more newborn sized stuff so thatyou have enough for a new outfit at every feeding or change.just in case....

Tons of people are asking me what size clothing I still need for the baby. I have had everything gifted and haven't had to purchase, I just organized it, and it is such a mixture of items, I don't know what to say! Plus, I would love to know what to still add to my registry. Of course everyone is different, but I would love some semi-standard ideas. If someone can offer advice...I'd appreciate it! :-)

NB: 2 rompers, 1 s/s onesie, pants, 1 sleeper
0-3: 1 romper, 3 L/S tops, 2 sleepers, 3 sets of pants, 5 s/s onesies, 3 L/S onesies, 1 pair jeans

Some are labeled 3-6 and other just 6 month, so I'm combining them all...
3-6: 3 sleep and play, 2 L/S onesies
6: 17 s/s onesies, 2 L/S tee, 3 L/S onesie, 4 L/S sleepers, 2 pants, 2 sweaters, 1 n/s romper

And I just have a handful of 9m/12m...which I'm definitely not worried about yet.
