@sorrycharlie: yeah, my sister's baby who is in 12 mos at 7 mos old is EBF, he hasn't even started solids yet! so there are always exceptions to the rule.
I know it's hard to plan :( I had a hard time with that too.
It's usually just the first 1-2 years though, after that most babies all even out to about the same size.

@artbee: that's true - my brother and I were large babies and we were BF. I guess I'll just have to be patient and see! darn my over-planning tendencies..

@sorrycharlie: My mom breastfed all of her babies and we were pretty chunky. My mom has been going back in my brothers baby book to compare where he was at LO's age, and he weighed either the same or more than her. She's formula fed.

good to know about the brands! just about all of what we have so far is carter's - a few random ones that MIL got at TJ Maxx.

@miss-spunkin: my plan is to BF, assuming I'm okay with milk coming in! even if baby can't figure out latch, I plan to pump. so maybe she'll be a slim-jim :P

Depends on the brand. Gerber clothes are pretty small. But she is always too big for what the size says. LO is 8 1/2 months now and she's in 12-18 month clothes. She's in the 95th percentile for weight, and 93rd for height.

It definitely depends on the baby.
My best friend has a toddler who was wearing size 24 month clothes at 14 months old.

@Andrea: Same here. BRU and Carters were small; Old Navy, and Gap were a little big.

@sorrycharlie: gosh it depends SO MUCH on the baby.

My sister's son is 7 months old and already in 9-12mos! And she is petite and small as is her husband, so it's so funny they have such a chub-a-lub babe! He's always been big. By the time he was 2 mos old he was already ahead of the sizes.

But MY BABY so far is seeming to fit according to size. I'm wondering if he will chunk up or if he'll always be more slender. He is nearly 2 mos old and still in newborn, and only a few 0-3 mos, though they tend to be big.

It also depends if you plan to BF or formula feed. According to WHO growth charts, EBF babies tend to be smaller than formula fed babies - not in a bad way at all, they just have different growth patterns.

I would plan for your baby to fit 9-12 mos around 9 mos old, but she could be 12 mos too, you never know... Or, she could be in 6 mos still. It just depends on her unique build.

@sorrycharlie: it also depends what brand. Like I find Carters to be small so I would size up to 12. But for baby Gap, 9 months is probably fine.

I don't have my own yet (just a few more weeks!), but my niece has always been off the charts on length, so nothing fit true to size. Like, at 18 months, she could wear 24 month clothing for length, but 12 month pants fit at the waist. So, she had all 24 month clothing that my SIL altered for her tiny waist.

thanks for the help ladies! so generally..anything 9 months, 12 months should fit next summer (at 8-11 months old) but could be a little tight or loose? but fit enough to wear it?

haha I wish bebe was born in the middle of a season, might make it easier.

My LO is off the charts in height, so at almost 8 months, we are starting to wear 12 month clothes.

My LO fits in her clothes PERFECTLY when she is 1.5-2 months older than the clothes suggests. For example, her 3-6 months clothes? They were a PERFECT fit when LO was 7.5 months old. And by perfect fit, I mean the sleeves weren't too long, the fit was snug but not tight, and I could button up the crotch without giving her a diaper wedgie. Of course, the perfect fit only lasts a couple of weeks. She, generally, wears clothes at the age is suggests.

my LO has been very close. she tends to outgrow things about one month earlier. so like she is almost 24 months and i switched her over to 24 months clothing at 23 months.

wasn't sure if this was gear!

anyway, people are already buying us a TON of baby girl clothes. I'm trying to encourage people to buy a variety of sizes - but here's where I'm a little tripped.

baby girl will be about 9 months next june. would you recommend 9 months clothing for summer, or 12 months? was your baby much bigger/smaller than the 'recommended' size based on age?
