@Andrea: I never understood how sticking something up their bums makes them go. Like, as soon as you stick your finger in there, do they poop immediately? I don't get it...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will definitely cut out the rice and increase the pears and maybe throw in some sweet potatoes.
@Andrea: Good idea. will definitely give that a go!

@chopsuey119: well, i figured you would not mind but maybe others don't want to use their fingers. you probably made a video of yourself doing it. ;-)

I would also suggest not to give rice until there is poop again since you give rice when kids have diarrhea. It is binding as @looch said. The "P" fruits all help them go: pears, prunes, peach.

Have you tried massaging the tummy?

@chopsuey119: @Rubies: You can stick in a thermometer if you don't want to use your finger!!

My LO was constipated before starting solids and we gave her pedialyte once a day. It worked well for her, and the doctor said babies can never get too much of that stuff.

LO doesn't eat enough solids yet for it to effect her I guess.

@Rubies: MAke sure you don't let her go more than a week! If she does, you can always probe with your pinki like I did.

Yep. SIGH. LO has started solids (but just a little of bit this and that, which includes cereal, butternut squash, and pear) and she hasn't pooed in a couple of days. I think I'm either going to JUST give her pear or just breastfeed until I see a poop.

I cooked prunes, I got the ones that are dried, unsulphered and pitted. I would toss them in with an apple or pear, because on their own, the taste was strong.

I never did prune juice, but would have if the prunes didn't get things moving. In general, I wanted to avoid introducing fruit juices. P fruits are supposed to get things going, so if pears aren't doing it, try peaches, or plums.

Also, rice is binding, so you may want to back off on that a bit. Sub in a sweet potato and see if that makes a difference.

My baby girl is still straining to poop as well. She's now on a full pear diet (except for milk of course) and I'm also mixing in some prune juice. She only has solids twice a day and I'm only giving her an ounce or less. I hope she regulates soon. I also have some baby probiotics that im thinking about guving her. But I'll probably call our doctor tomorrow to see what she says.

OMG. My LO was constipated for 12 days!!!! She had a crazy long and solidly painful poop on day 12. :( I've been feeding her a pouch of Happy Baby pears every day. One pouch/day.
http://www.amazon.com/HAPPYBABY-Organic-Stage-Fresh-Anjou/dp/B0030VJ7T6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328156460&sr=8-1
So far so good.
I would try giving your LO some water or apple/prune juice every day.

Lo is 7 months on Friday and we have been on solids for almost a full month now. I've noticed that he does not poop regularly since. He sometimes will go two days with no poop at all. I hate to stress over this but it does worry me. I try to give him pear every day for breakfast. He looooooooooooves solids, so I think I got really eager and I am over feeding him. He gets pear for breakfast and then a combination of veggie, rice (congee) 2 to 3x a day. Any advice? My supply also seemed to drop. I still breastfeed him 5 to 7x a day but I dont think he is drinking as much. Sometimes depending on his naps, I dont end up feeding him until after he has his solids.

Anyone else deal with constipation after starting solids. I really want to avoid feeding him the stewed prunes in jars for now. Did anyone cook prunes for their baby?
