My DS did exercises on an exercise ball starting at 5 or 6 months, but I don't remember exactly what he did because he did it with a PT. The PT also recommended a couple exercises to try ourselves. One, putting a toy by his side during tummy time so he practices turning on his tummy. Two, holding a toy high in the air in front of him to encourage him to lift up on his arms. Three, actually helping him go though the motions of rolling back to belly, and belly to back.

@bhbee: it's just a soft ikea one we had (like plush) but a regular play size ball from the dollar store would work too..

@Banana330: this is helpful thanks! I’m curious what kind of ball is that? Like is it soft or blown up like an exercise ball?

I second an evaluation. Our second had this issue, she could sit, pull to stand and had rolled over once or twice but would not do it regularly! We did physio with her for a few months and it really helped. Some was mid line crossing stuff and other exercises were sitting with legs at right angles and lots of hand and knees over a ball. We did a lot of practice sitting transitions to/from lying down and to/from hand and knees. She’s 20 months now and it’s no longer an issue.

Never hurts to get an Early Intervention evaluation and see what they say! She sounds fine to me, but core strength is VIP, as is midline crossing (crawling in the traditional way) according to my son's OT.

@jennlin821: I’m definitely going to ask at her appt in two weeks and see if the pedi recommends talking to PT. I’m not really super worried, but don’t want her to get too behind either.

If you are really worried, schedule an appointment with a pediatric physical therapist. They will be able to tell you if she is truly behind and give you some home-exercises.

My other thought is to maybe get a door way jumper? I believe jumping helps create core muscles.

@Kemma: no the weird thing to me is that she’s been sitting unaided for almost 4 months! We don’t have a jumper or any of those things. On her back she’ll play with toys she can reach but isn’t super motivated to do much else. She used to hate it until her reflux got better with age, but at least she’s happy doing that now. My other kids learned to roll in the crib so I’m kind of mystified that she doesn’t do it! She does spend more time in the car than is ideal since she’s #3, but I can’t fix that.

@Chuckles: that’s a good idea, was it just a regular size ball?

Are you propping her when she sits? I’d be inclined to avoid using any baby containers or having having her on the car seat for any length of tome so that she has plenty of room for free movement. Have you thought about taking her to music and movement classes? What does she do if you just lie her on the floor on her back?

She might be a little too young, but when my son started PT at around a year, one thing that seemed to work well for core strengthening was to have him sit on an exercise ball. We would hold him by the hips and then move the ball around just a bit so that he had to adjust his upper body and engage his core as it moved.

@MrsSRS: I’ve definitely seen both, but I think mostly straight. The time I really noticed the slouch she was gnawing on a chew toy which may have been part of it. It did worry me though.

Does she sit up tall with a straight spine or sort of slumped curved over?

My baby is 9m today and definitely slow on the gross motor milestones, except she’s been a good sitter since 5m. She rarely rolls over (I’ve seen it a couple times on the floor accidentally I think) and she never does it in the crib. She’s nowhere close to crawling that I can see and definitely can’t go floor to sitting. She still hates being on her tummy (and still often spits up while doing it). She seems to have plenty of leg strength for standing but seems very wobbly in the middle. She is not really a fan of anything but sitting.

She’s great at fine motor and my first child also put her focus there so I’m not too worried, I know it will work out.

But I’m wondering if anyone has done specific things to help with core strength? I’m mostly just trying to put her in all the positions she doesn’t like to practice but not sure what else I could be doing. Thanks!
