@deerylou: what ended up happening? Was the newborn covered even if you didn't enroll newborn after? I am in California and in a similar situation.

I was told this was the case, that DS would be covered under my insurance the 1st 30 days, but it turned out not to be. DS was covered like the first 48 hours and then we were supposed to notify insurance right away, which we didn't do since we were under the 30 day understanding. I don't remember exactly what we did about it, but in any case, we ended up putting him on DH's insurance within a week or so of the birth. Definitely clear it up with your insurance company beforehand, take notes and names of people you speak with!

@deerylou: BCBS through work is also a private plan...if that makes sense?
Anyways, from my understanding, yes he *is* covered for the 30 days, but you have to send in all his info within those 30 days or else they will turn around and bill for for them. Ya know? They are basically giving you a grace period. But, if by day 31, they don't have his SSN and birth cert that says you 2 are his parents, then they will assume he isn't and bill you for the medical costs.
Of course, all *your* medical costs, Birth, OB, hospital stay, are covered either way. But, you already know that...

@TurtleDoves: We both have Blue Shield, and the rep told us that baby is covered right away, from birth. This might be because it's our own insurance plan, and not through a second party? I don't know. I wish this was an easier process. Health insurance and Comcast - go away, both of you. ;)

Not me.
I have bcbs through my parents still, because I am under 26. So, for me, I couldn't add my son because it is not my plan to add.

My husband also has BCBS but through work, so it is his plan.
baby was covered by his insurance immediately, but he needed to send in SSN and birth info *within* 30 days to prove he was my husband's son, or else we'd get billed.

Sounds like a headache we'll just have to manage when we get there, haha.

Okay, DH checked in with his insurance rep. It sounds like, in California, baby's costs are considered an offshoot of the mother for the first 30 days; i.e. all costs will reflect the mother's deductible, will go on the mother's ID number, etc. You have up until 31 days to add LO to a plan so he/she gets continued health benefits past that point.

I feel like I'm probably missing something, but whatever. She's coming in the next 72 hours, so there's no turning back.

My baby was NOT covered until I added her. To the point where, 3 weeks from her birth, we received a HUUUUUGE bill from the hospital along with a note telling me to call with her insurance info and it would be re-processed. I had to send in her SSN and such to our insurance in order to get her added.

We had the exact same experience as @yoursilverlining. We basically had to give the hospital and the pediatrician the baby's insurance info (FI's) and they rebilled everything.

He was never considered part of my deductible and was his own person from birth.

@Mrsbells: That is what I thought! I think I'm just completely confused if she will be considered me, or her own person during that time. I only ask because we have a noticeable difference between individual and family deductibles.

For LO, she was automatically covered under my insurance plan, so even though we knew we were adding her to my husband's plan (separate employers), by default the hospital billed everything to my insurance from LO's stay post-birth.

We just had to call my husband's insurance, add LO and they backdated her coverage to the day she was born. Those newborn days are a bit blurry, but I don't remember it being difficult AT ALL to do, and I don't remember there being any issues with coverage.

No worries - I so appreciate the responses. We're both on Blue Shield plans, so it might make it a little easier to communicate specifics once we enroll her. Who knows, though.

Our family deductible is 2k more than an individual, so, yikes! Our plans include free baby well visits and immunizations, which is helpful, I suppose.

@deerylou: Yes...it may get messy with the claims if you go with a different plan than what you're currently on, but your company should cover everything having to do with the birth, and then once DD is here, she will have her own set of claims from the hospital, and that's what will be charged to whichever plan you decide on. Just be sure that you call the hospital with the baby's new ID number if she's going on a plan other than yours.

For us they did! DS was on my plan for 30 days until he went on DH's plan. My insurance covered the first 30 days but he did have his own deductible, not a huge deal if your deductible is small, but for us it was an additional $1000 deductible for him. Eventually, the plan he went on covered some of that, but not all. We had 30 days from birth to let either of our insurance companies know that we were adding him.

So, only if the health insurance plan is fully-insured by the insurance company. If your company has a self-insured plan, they are not covered for the first 30 days unless you add them to your plan within 30 days of birth.

No matter which plan you go with, you'll want to add the baby within 30 days of birth effective her date of birth.

Okay, so, as I understand, an infant is covered under the mother's health insurance plan for the first 30 days of his/her life.

DH and I both have separate, employer sponsored health insurance plans. We will likely not be placing DD on *my* health insurance plan, because DH might receive additional help with her premium from his employer. If not, we're getting her an individual plan. The premium to cover her under mine is outrageous, and I am not 100% sure I'll be returning to work. Will my insurance still cover DD's first 30 days of medical expenses, even if we ultimately enroll her on a different plan?

Thanks! :)
