My 5 year old was hiding from my grandma and she fell asleep under a heavy blanket. She was drenched in sweat by the time she was found. So scary!!! It really looked like nobody was there as the type of blanket appeared flat. My grandma was frantically looking for my daughter for like 20 or more minutes. Super duper scary for us. @skipra:

This is so sad. That poor family. It breaks my heart.
I can easily see how something like this could happen. My 4 year old snuck out of his room at nap time one day and grabbed the iPad and was hiding under his blanket. It got all tucked around his head and he fell asleep. Luckily I checked on him and then freaked out when I saw him. He was burning up and soaked with sweat. I do wonder what would have happened if I had gotten to him just a little bit later. One of my scariest parenting moments and every time one of my kids sleeps a minute later than normal I am paranoid.

@alphagam84: My whole thing is, if it was suffocation, would blanket weight matter either? That's why this is so much worse even than a lot of stories you hear. Freaked out.

I feel awful for the family involved but the unfortunate reality is that as parents we have to make decisions around what's an acceptable level of risk for our families on a daily basis. As an example, both my babies had bedding in their cot but it was well tucked under the mattress and wasn't going anywhere whereas in contrast lots of families use the Rock'N Play which also doesn't meet the guidelines for safe sleep but people keep recommending them! We still have tonnes of people forward facing their babies well before two or moving kids to seatbelt boosters before they're ready which is just as dangerous.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that yes, this is a terrible and devastatingly tragedy but sometimes tragedies happen 😔

I cannot imagine their grief. I don't know what I would do or how I would go on if that happened to us. DD is 20 months old now and she is still in a sleep sack. When we travel I put an A&A muslim blanket in her travel crib in case it is cold but that's all I dare to let her have. Anything thicker scares me!

When are blankets safe? I also have a 19 month old who sleeps with a blanket and I'm paranoid now. Are these just freak things?

That was gut wrenching to read... A friend of mine worked with someone who found their daughter, who had just turned TWO dead in her bed one morning. It still haunts me to think about what those moments realizing their child is gone was like for them.

@adira @delight yeah, I feel a bit better with the AAP recommendations but it's still a little nerve wracking. We didn't introduce the blanket and animals until we sleep trained at 17 months. Now, he flips out if they aren't in his crib with him, so I can't imagine taking them away.

There apparently were a lot of people suggesting that the death was vaccine related. So the family felt they had to come out and explain what really happened.

So incredibly awful. I'm just sick thinking about this story. This poor, poor family. No judgement here at all. Having to live with this is bad enough.

@snowjewelz: I was just thinking yesterday about this bizarre impulse people seem to always have to figure out a way to blame people for tragedies. It hit me a lot here on HB when we were talking about the poor child that died at Disney from the crocodile attack. I guess it's a coping mechanism for people, like if we can find a way to blame the victim then it makes us feel safer like we could avoid the same horrible outcome?

I can't remember exactly when we started putting blankets in the crib but I know I started to feel comfortable putting a few small things in there once she was able to roll around.

@MrsADS: It kind of sounds like in this story it was a freak accident of the blanket getting caught and pulled tight around baby? I would think your 22 month old would be able to maneuver out of that but it would be a lot harder at 7 months :crying: If you are worried you could try giving him
the smaller A&A loveys. Especially if it would help you have less anxiety.
