my LOs where so different LO1 started eating food early (i couldn't keep it away from him) and was eating what felt like meals by 8 months.

Lo2's tung thrust stayed around for ages, it was impossible to give him a bottle until well after 4 months because of this and he's taken to food very slowly.

each their own...

Don't stress out! We were told that food before one is just for fun. They really don't need it yet! Our ODD wasn't eating much actual food until she was 7-8 months. Our doctor wasn't concerned. We did baby led weaning too, and FWIW, once she did start eating she was (and still is) a great eater!

@catlady: Probably 9 months? I was so frustrated because with my older son, B, we did purees and also started at 4 months so by 6 or 7 months I remember him eating a wide variety of flavours, etc,, plus I knew what he was getting because I was feeding him little cubes. With W we did BLW and so I feel like I was giving him things and maybe some of it went into his mouth but maybe not, and definitely it almost all ended up on the floor or smushed into his hair, and I kept thinking he was never going to figure it out. I just looked through my phone and I have a picture of him at 7 months with both a mum mum and a carrot sticking out of his mouth looking completely appalled like he doesn't understand what I'm doing to him. I tried to give him things like cream cheese and hummus smeared on things thinking it might melt in his mouth.

I also never had any luck with the mesh feeder. I would say definitely don't try putting food in his mouth, and maybe offer things like mum mums or cheerios that melt, or things like breadsticks that are almost like toys, where he can sort of gnaw on them, to start getting him used to flavours, and just let him sit at the table with you and have some food on his tray and see you eating. I also have a 2 minute video of W chewing on the wrong end of a baby spoon, but he was so delighted to have cutlery like the rest of us.

@ShootingStar: @Pumuckl: Thank you! I'm relieved to hear that my little guy is still in the realm of normal and that it worked out for others.

Don't be discouraged yet. My DD1 (aka LO2) didn't show any signs of being ready until she was a solid 7 months old. She was eating table foods by 9 months. Sometimes things just have to click.

The sign I was mostly waiting for was that she would put things in her mouth when sitting at the table.

We started DS1/LO1 on solids at 7 months too due to some traveling and he was eating table foods at 8.5-9 months too.

@catlady: We had the tongue thrust reflex with DD for what felt like forever. She was maybe around 8 months by the time she lost it. She was interested in food, but it was so frustrating to feed her because every time I gave her a spoonful of something, she'd stick out her tongue and it would all come out. I ended up having more success with table foods that she could feed herself. Now at just under 10 months she eats everything I give her, no problems.

@skinnycow: @FaithFertility: @kes18: @erinbaderin: Thanks ladies, this reassures me. It can be hard to step back and remember how little he is sometimes when it seems like we've been trying for awhile.

@erinbaderin: Do you remember when your son started to eat more?

I felt this same way with my second son, he just didn't seem to actually eat any food! We did BLW as well and even if he'd put food in his mouth he'd just push it back out. My friend told me "Food before one is just for fun" which helped - remember that he doesn't actually NEED to eat anything right now, and he has lots of time to get used to it.

I really wouldn't worry, he's only 6.5 mo. Just like walking or rolling over, they will go at their own pace and achieve milestones when they are ready. Just keep offering but don't stress, bring it up at your next dr.'s appointment if it hasn't improved by then.

@catlady: I would just keep putting it on the tray and modeling how to pick it up and eat it!

Bring it up to Dr. Next apt!

Good luck!

Don't be discouraged! We had this issue with DD and she wasn't really eating solids consistently until she was about 11 months old. He's getting all the nutrition he needs from BM/formula so try not to stress out. Just keep offering and he'll eat eventually!

ETA: DD is 15 months old now and eats a TON.

We introduced solids to DS (6.5 months) about a month ago, but he still will not eat anything. We started with purees and oatmeal, and he seemed to have some tongue thrust reflex still, because he just spit everything out every time. He also gags almost anytime we put food in his mouth. After a few weeks, he started refusing to eat at all (clamping mouth closed, turning away).

We took a break for about a week and started up again with baby led weaning, thinking he would do better if he set his own pace. Now he just ignores the food, or bangs it on the table. He never tries to put it in his mouth. We've tried giving him a mesh feeder, or putting food on our fingers or his, but that hasn't worked either.

I know it's pretty early but since we've already been trying for a month, I am starting to get stressed out. We didn't have issues with DD so this is new to me.

Has anyone gone through this? Tips?
