@dc yoga bee: I'm right there with you. Currently trying to get LO (3w old) to calm down due to huge gas pains from my oversupply/heavy letdown. She has at least one period a day of being completely inconsolable after nursing. I have a toddler too, so it's really hard to find the time to nurse LO "correctly" in order to make sure she's not going to be troubled by gas.
We're also only getting really short stretches of sleep during day and night. The whole thing is exhausting for everyone :(

@avivoca: I will right now! It is so hard to burp her.

@dc yoga bee: Have you tried bouncing on the labor ball? We definitely had to bounce the burps out of H in the beginning.

Update in case anyone else searches this in the future. I met with the lactation consultant yesterday. She advised me not to pump, try lying down (but when I do she yells like she's not getting enough), modified reclining, and increase my block feeding to 3x per side instead of the two times same side I have already been doing. She also seconded gripe water. Last night was awful with LO spitting up all over me, refusing the breast, and crying for 3 hours straight. We are thinking it's serious gas pains, so we got the gripe water this morning, and she's finally napping.

Thanks! This is the first time in days she's slept a 2-3 he stretch. She's still sleep since the last session I fed her lying down. I think I will make an apt with a lactation consultant too!

@sweetooth: Thanks for the rec! We went with Pediatric Associates of Alexandria, since everyone in our area we talked to kept recommending them. We are probably moving at the end of the year (maybe Reston or Fairfax), so I will bookmark this office of we head to Fairfax!

I agree with above.

Talk to a lactation consultant. Peds give notoriously bad advice when it comes to breastfeeding. My hunch would be if your baby is gaining, just keep her upright and make sure to burp her thoroughly. Pumping is messy and WILL give you crazy oversupply if you've already got a strong letdown.

I fed DD in the recliner leaned back, belly to belly, sometimes diagonal and that helped tons.

Block feeding really helped me with over supply and overactive letdown. There are good articles about it, basically you nurse on one side only, or even multiple times on the same side until your supply is more regulated. This ensures that baby gets more hindmilk too, which helps with gas.

Good luck!

I would not pump. At all. With my first it made my forceful let down and over supply even worse. You can also lean way back and let her nurse uphill. It will get better as she gets older.

I second @SleepyMonkey -- that was the only thing that ever worked for us (pulling LO off during letdown and spraying into a washcloth or burp cloth).

I have a similar problem and it's been helpful to hand express for two mins before latching her. That way she doesn't choke and also gets more of the fatty hind milk.

I think pumping a little bit till your flow slows just a lil bit is fine, b/c that counts towards her feeding. I think only when pumping AFTER she feeds will create extra demand, you know what I mean? Or you can manual pump/hand express so it's not as intense?

Thanks for the advice! I decided not to pump, and did the reclining method. Gravity worked in her favor, and she just nursed without choking or spitting out the nipple at all. Then DH did some bicycles with her legs, and he could hear the gas coming out. Now, she is finally sleeping. Hopefully, this solves our troubles! At least buy me an hour of sleep!

I wouldn't pump! If she's you're only, I would try and bf leaning back or lying down on your back with the baby on top. I have a massive oversupply and it's working really well.

Definitely talk to an lc! In the meantime, I would use manual pump "to take the edge off" and then latch her. I usually got 1-2 oz to freeze this way and the flow was more manageable.

Get her started and then once your let down starts, pull her off and spray into a burp cloth. After it calms down a bit, you can put her back on. Should help lessen the amount of air she is taking in.

I probably wouldn't pump, it will only make the problem worse, talk to a lactation consultant if you can! I've heard of people having success using nipple shields with an overactive let-down, or hand expressing a bit before feeding baby. Also, gas problems in such a young baby are so so common, their guts just aren't developed yet.

We took LO (12 days old) into the ped today because she spent 3 hrs grunting like she was in pain/couldn't breathe. She still had normal pee and poop, so we didn't know what was going on. Turns out it's just gas from my Breastmilk coming out too fast and strong! She gave us some tips to put her on her tummy, keep her upright for 30 minutes, bicycle her legs, and get some of these drops- I forgot the name already! She also told me to try lying down and feeding her, or to pump a couple times a day before feeding her.

My question is if I start pumping, will it make my over supply even greater?!? Is there any tips or tricks to time it? The plus side, is she went from 5lb 11 ounces to 6lb 11 ounces in one week! A pound in a week!
