@gingerbebe: I think we’ll work on those longer naps then first! It’s a start, I just hope it wasn’t a one time thing lol

@MsBAM: I think you have to think of it in order of priority. The priority is to get him to take longer naps without nursing by himself. If, for a while, that is in a swing, that's okay in the greater scheme of things. Eventually you can approach moving him from a swing to a crib over time (some people, for instance, switch off the swing and once they are sleeping without swinging in the swing seat, they attempt the crib, etc).

I put my LO in the swing awake and he fell asleep!!! My cat napper fell asleep in the swing during nap time and has been sleeping for an hour and 10min!!!!! I don’t know what to do with myself!!! Is this still considered a sleep crutch?

DS2 will nurse to almost sleep but then I have to get DH to take him and rock him for a minute before putting him down. If I try it when he stirs he wants to nurse.

@Ina85: I would say his temperament is moderate. When he’s upset about something he definately makes his needs known, by fussing but not usually full out crying. The only time his cries are intense are in his car seat, sometimes. I tried rocking him to sleep today for about 20-30mins, didn’t work. I then nursed him to sleep and he fell asleep right away. I put him in his crib and he woke up, opened his eyes and whined for about 2 seconds and went right back to sleep. Is that considered drowsy but awake? We do plan to sleep train.

I have a high needs kiddo that would not do sleep training well at all. I found he needed to be nursed to sleep if I was in the house until 20.5 months. Then all of a sudden he was over it and fell asleep on his own. It's possible your kiddo is ready. Try having your husband rock him down. Once that works reliably, you can try. It's magical when they are no longer so dependent on you

@MsBam: It seems like he's ready for a different way of going to sleep. Are you planning on sleep training? I would see how it goes, give it a try if you are ready. You can always try again at a later point if it doesn't work out but it could also work, you don't know until you try. Temperament plays a big part for sleep training and there are many different methods of sleep training. Does he have a moderate temperament or is he a high needs baby? Have you tried putting him to bed drowsy but awake? You can try putting him to sleep drowsy but awake and see if he can settle himself to sleep. If he starts crying you can rock him and try again. If he's not having it, you should try rocking to sleep. These are things I would try for going to sleep for the night and naps. I would still nurse for night wakings and help him sleep whatever works the best and fastest- nursing and sneaking away or rocking to sleep. If you plan to sleep train I can share what worked best for us or I can try and help answer if you have any questions, good luck!

That's good he's been sleeping for over an hour, he's making it past one sleep cycle. His naps should start to get longer, progressively

My LO1 started to be able to be rocked to sleep around 4.5 months after a really horrible phase of resisting it for hours at a time. It could be that your LO has become ready for a different method of going to sleep!

@Ina85: do you think it’s his way of telling me he’s ready for sleep training? The last couple days he’s been fighting me at the breast (for naps) to try and get him to sleep like we always do. Eventually he gave in and went to sleep nursing when he was really tired. Also he usually cat naps for 30-40mins. When he woke up from the nap that MIL put him to sleep for, I nursed him and he went back to sleep. He’s been sleeping over an hour which is VERY unlike him.

You should try it, maybe he's ready. My lo was fighting me so hard when I tried to rock her to sleep, we had been doing that for months but before she turned 6 months, it was no longer working. I finally gave up and laid her down in her crib and she put herself to sleep. It was shocking, but I guess it was her way of trying to let me know she didn't want to be rocked to sleep anymore. Hope things go well for you!

Hi everyone!

I’ve posted before about my LO (4.5mo) only being able to fall asleep nursing. Well today, he was really tired and fighting me putting him to sleep nursing while my MIL was here. So, she tried rocking him (which I’ve tried before) and I couldn’t believe she got him to sleep in like five minutes?!?!? She even put him down and he didn’t wake up!! My husband and I have tried rocking him before too and it didn’t work! I usually side lie nurse then sneak off. Is this because he knows he doesn’t feed from her or should I try to put him to sleep this way to see if it works? I know he was overtired and hadn’t slept for almost 3.5 hours but I just can’t believe it!!!!
