If he’s awake he won’t suffocate. A main reason supine infant sleep is recommended is because when babies sleep on their stomachs they basically sleep much more deeply and are harder to rouse. This is also part of him learning to roll over.

Just a step in the learning to roll processes. My babies practiced new skills at night all the time. Sitting, crawling, rolling, standing. It made me crazy... but passes.

I remember my daughter going through this. She would freak out and scream being stuck in her stomach but would flip herself back into her tummy right after I turned her back. It was a phase and then she quickly learned to roll all the way AND started sleeping on her tummy almost all the time. It seemed like it took forever but it was probably a week in reality.

1) totally safe once they can roll to tummy on their own. Mine did it by 4/5 months.
2) it’s a phase. The more you go in and flip him the longer it will take for him to get used to it. And how will he learn to roll back if you keep doing it for him. He’s crying because he’s sort of disoriented. He’ll get used to it but you have to let him be. He’s not in pain or in danger. You may find he ends up really liking tummy sleeping! :-)

@annem1990: how long has this been going on for? This happened with DS when he could pull himself up. He would pull himself up and then freak out to "get down" - not sure if this is helpful but I think it's a phase and this too shall pass

@Silva: I’d feel comfortable with his sleeping on his belly if he liked it. But he screams, tenses up and struggles.

@Silva: No he hasn’t been in a swaddle in many months. He’s just in a light, sleeveless sleep sack.

is he swaddled? although its disrupting his sleep, its my understanding that when a baby can roll themselves over it becomes safe for them to sleep on their stomach (unless he is swaddled).
as for the sleep disruption, he will get used to it quickly, i'm sure- usually only took maybe a week or less for my kids.

LO is 7 months. He’s been mostly STTN for a couple of months now and sleep trained. He does use a pacifier for sleep which I will sometimes have to pop back in (maybe once a night). For the past couple of weeks he has seemed to prefer sleeping on his side.

However, the past few nights he has continually been rolling to his stomach and then freaking out. He will do like a “Superman” and cry until I flip him back. I don’t think he knows how to flip himself. He does not enjoy tummy time, although I do do it every day.

I feel like a nervous wreck. I’m so worried he’s going to flip and I’m not going to wake up. I’m petrified of him not being able to breathe. I’m normally not a worrier so this has been really hard. Has anyone else’s little ones been through this? I just want him to learn to flip in any direction easily so I can put my mind at ease. :bummed:
