@runningelley - Absolutely not - don't worry about it! Remember, if he eats too much, he'll just throw up. Lots of newborns are born much heavier than him.

@QBbride: Haha I was just thinking about how I hadn't had a chance to respond to your wall post! Yes, the production is great and I'm totallly okay with him gaining lots of weight. Is it possible for him to gain too much for his body to support? Gosh, I just feel like I'm either underfeeding or overfeeding....it's just impossible to get right!

It is impossible to over feed a breastfed baby. Don't worry about it - just feed him on demand! Congrats on the great milk production, you should be proud :-)

The bloat sounds bad, those are good suggestions to deal with it. I personally would not put my breastfed baby on a diet. LLL or a lactation consultant can give you another perspective on the issue, like people said.

@Running Elley: the bloat sounds uncomfortable. I know my pediatrician has my sons best interests at heart but really isn't knowledgeable in breastfeeding problems and solutions. It is great that you have an LC that can help you as well. Between the three of you, I think you can get a great solution.

FYI, don't replace your dairy with soy. In 70% of infants with dairy issues it can cause the same problems. I did that and it took too long to fix him.

@brownie: The first person I called when I left the pediatrician's office was my lactation consultant :) I won't make any actual feeding changes until I talk to her and get her take on it for sure! I just don't want him to be uncomfortable.

@runsyellowlites: I don't wake him up for any feedings though- he only eats when he's hungry. Do you think I'm supposed to just drag the feedings out so he's not getting as much? I have a call in to my LC to see what she suggests too. I imagine that the other side is just as frustrating, darn it =/

I wish weight wasn't such an issue. You may want to talk to la leche league or a lactation consultant before putting your newborn on a diet. Though I would definitely worry about the bloat and do the things suggested.

Haven't had that issue, but it sounds like maybe she's suggesting pumping IN PLACE of a feeding, where you DON'T feed him. I guess to continue maintaining & establishing your supply?

We're on the other end of the spectrum where my petite Miss P is smaller than they'd like. =/

I'm EBF Elliot and he's only 3 weeks old so we're still feeding on demand. He's been gaining a lot of weight which, until today's pediatrician appt, seemed like a good thing. At his appt last week he'd gained a pound in a week, was up to 8 pounds 2.5 ounces from 7 pounds and 2 ounces the week before. Today, exactly one week later, he weighed in at 9 pounds and 8 ounces.

He's been really fussy and gassy for the past few days and his stomach is really bloated. The pediatrician said to try gas drops at least twice a day, put him on his tummy and try to eliminate dairy. Those are all things that I expected and plan on doing. Once she saw how much weight he'd gained though she said that he's gaining too fast and that he could be extra bloated because his stomach is having to take in more than his body is growing. She suggested that I pump a few times a day so that he doesn't eat as much breast milk.

That doesn't seem to make sense to me. If I pump and also feed him isn't my supply going to increase?? That seems to be exactly what we don't want right now. I'm just confused and frustrated. Has anyone else had these issues?
