As others mentioned, you can make your own version, but we bought these and drilled to it a gate from northstar. Pressure mounted gates are not for stairs.

Another vote for the retractable gate. We have them at the top and bottom - were recommended and installed by a professional baby proofer.

@Petitduck: @MrsBucky: Thanks! Sounds like he would be able to do it if we taught him. I like the idea of not having a gate swing into the hall.

@MrsBucky: my kid can only unlock the top latch. But I also haven’t tried to teach her how to use it. But I have witnessed both climb over the gate...with some difficulty and I told my oldest (nearly 4) that was not okay to do once I saw her do it.

Yes to showing adults how to do it. Although I feel like most baby gates have a little degree of difference that they often need explaining quickly.

@Petitduck: my 4 year old can mostly do it on his own. I’m guessing a 6 yo would be fine. The mechanics is there is a button on the top that you have to push down and twist to unlock it and then you have to pull the gate to unhook the two hooks, then let it retract. It does take coordination to get it re-closed because you have to keep the tension on the gate (ie not let it retract) while you catch the hooks. Then pushing and twisting the lock is easy. It’s not hard, but I have to teach new adults in our house how to do it- it’s not self explanatory.

@ALV91711: do you want your 6 year old to be able to do it? They’re a bit tricky to do and they’re fairly tall. My friend has a different brand and hers is hard too.

We have one at the top and bottom of our stairs. They’re more meant for the bottom or for in between rooms, but it works at the top too and has been run into by our youngest on more than one occasion (proving its durability and safety) haha.

We had a set up like @mrsbucky, except with a swinging gate, at the bottom of our stairs. We attached the gate to 1x1 pieces of wood, which were then zip tied to the railings. It worked great and was very secure.

We have a summer brand retractable gate at the bottom of our stairs. My husband enclosed the banister in 4 pieces of wood so nothing is screwed into the banister. Zip ties would also work.

Strongly recommend a retract a gate. Expensive, but way less annoying than a swinging gate. Also, you can use zip ties and and extension piece to avoid drilling. You could probably pad it to avoid even scratching that gorgeous woodwork. Zip tie solution looks like this photos.

We have the one listed above too. Ours can’t be pressure mounted on one side (rail side ) so my husband took a slab of wood and zip tied it around the rail and he drilled one side into the wood. The other side is pressure mounted.

This is what we got for our kitchen. It's a bit pricey but totally worth it. It pressure mounted so you dont have to make any holes or drill. It gives you the option though in case you want to. The door is super nice!

What is the best baby gate for my stairs? I do not want to drill into the wood, it’s original to the house and we want to sell the house next year sometime. I never baby proofed for my first son, he was too timid to climb on anything, stairs included.
