@dojo: you wouldn't! We didn't. The pressure mount basically has a screw tight so you can just mount the bottom part to the base and top to the wall. The top mount would just extend further do that the gate is tight and level.

@banana: oh I didn't know the Dreambaby gate could be hardware mounted (probably should have checked that...) I got it from a friend and only had the pressure mount. I could probably use it for the bottom of my stairs where it wouldn't hit the trim!

@merryc: I didn't even think about the feature of having it be wipeable. I bet it makes keeping it clean easy! I like how it is clear too.

@locavore_mama: I was looking at that one on Amazon! I was thinking I would probably have to remove the trim to mount it at the top of the stairs though. I like how it would blend with the rest of our decor.

@wheres_c: Scary! It probably would be wise to install two gates!

We have a gate both at the top and bottom of the stairs. We have a Dreambaby one that can be both pressure and hardware mounted. We hardware mounted both for safety reasons.

Our main living space is downstairs and only the kids rooms are upstairs, so for now, we just have a mounted gate at the bottom of the stairs. We installed it on the first step and didn't have to worry about any molding. We have the first years everywhere gate I think....the one with the clear panels. I like it and it's easily wipeable :)

The kids are highly attended when upstairs, 1:1 ratio, so we don't have a top gate installed yet. When they are old enough to get out of their cribs/beds or open doors, we'll put one at the top. We have it in the garage on standby. The kids are super good about going down stairs feet first, crawling style though...if they were more head first wild child, and upstairs more, we'd definitely have put it up sooner.

@dojo: yes our stair case is slightly wide but the gate is adjustable though so the side panels can fold into the staircase

we have a gate at the bottom of the one stair case
we havent installed the two top ones we have.

we also have an odd shaped front hall staircase with a landing, so we probably will leave that as is and block off rooms instead.

We have this one:
http://amzn.com/B004CL9YHS

It has the ability to be pressure or hardware mounted. We pressure mount and never had an issue with it.

We only do at the top but we have short stairs (split level).

We have the munchkin protect. We only had a gate at the top of the stairs, since we were worried about him falling from the top, but he couldn't climb up on his own.

I was in the bathroom, and heard a clunk clunk clunk scream. Turns out he went from not being able to climb any steps, to being able to get halfway up the staircase!

Definitely buy a bottom gate!

@MrsBells: That one looks nice! Do you have a pretty wide opening at the top of the stairs?

@Periwinkle: Do you like the KidCo one you got besides the banister dilemma?

@dojo: we have one gate at the top of the stairs. You would need a hardware mounted gate. We have this one. It is steel and we like it
http://www.diapers.com/p/north-states-industries-supergate-deluxe-decor-metal-gate-346071

We also have a plastic gate for our kitchen

I'll be following this because we are having a similar dilemma. We bought a hardware mounted gate (a KidCo one) but cannot easily install the banister kit which would prevent us from drilling into the banister. I am now not sure what our options are so that we have something safe.

For those of your with stairs: Did you get two gates one for the top and one for the bottom or just the top? Also can you recommend a nice looking and easy to operate gate that can be hardware mounted without having to remove baseboard trim?

We have a pressure mounted DreamBaby gate that we have used in the past for our dogs but it doesn't really stay put very well because of where the mount hits the trim. With the dogs it wasn't as much an issue but now I really want to be sure the gate is secure.
