I think I put gates around the house when my oldest started crawling. Gated him off to the great room in the back so I can watch him wherever I'm at. Then put one on the top of the stairs. I got the Kidco pressure mounted metal one and it's held up. That one is still there with the gate open all the time. Don't really need it anymore; but will still need it when #2 is mobile. I did take off the other two gates in our great room when my oldest was around 2 years of age (he's 3 now). I just always made sure he didn't go up or down the stairs w/o me around. He was a pretty good listener then and most of the time now. So far, he's only had one tumble down the stairs from about 4 or 5 steps up when I wasn't taking him up. I'm not a fan of gates and hope I can take the ones downstairs off when my youngest is 2 as well. It'll just depend on how wild my youngest will be. ;)

That's the gate we have. We really like the look of it because it matches the look of our home more. It's currently pressure mounted not sure yet if we will screw it in.

We have the Dreambaby gates and we really like them alot. They're pressure mounted and hold FIRM. My son is pretty strong and is a climber and he has yet to even budge them a tiny bit. We have them on the top and bottom of our stairs and we plan on leaving them there for a few years, until baby #2 is at least 3 years old!

We put gates up when Lo was 7-8 months old I think, they're still up and we don't plan on taking them down for a few years. Baby #2 is coming in dec (Lo will be 21 months old).
We didn't drill into our walls and the gates hold up fine.

The only place we are going to put baby gates are at the bottom and top of our stairs. Are pressure mounted gates sturdy enough? I don't want to drill holes in our banisters if I don't have to but also don't want to compromise on safety.

Also I'm wondering how long people left their gates up. LO is 7.5 months and I don't plan to have #2 until she is at least 2.5 years old...would I leave the gate up until we are done using them for #2?
