@Silva: It is so tricky because you don't want to step on their feet and micromanage but they will be so much more successful with lots of info. Not that it is at all the same but I learned that the hard way when my mil watched my dog-- I told her table food didn't sit well with him but she decided it was too cute that he wanted tomatoes. He vomited all over my car after I picked him up... she will forever get very explicit instructions after that  .

@Cole: yeah, my parents got her to sleep in the stroller, but tried to transfer her out after 20 min. I got kind of annoyed the last time my inlaws babysat because they didn't even try to get her to sleep, so she ended up being a total zombie. I hint at "she is usually tired after 2 hours" but should probably be more concrete and direct in my instructions.

We ended up mostly hiring babysitters from DD's daycare for this reason. It was less traumatic to just use caretakers who she is already used to, rather than hiring other random sitters who she immediately distrusts.

Also, we often go out after we've put DD down for bed, so the babysitter is really just at the house to take care of things in case DD wakes up. That way DD usually doesn't even have to interact with the sitter at all!

I think another idea would be to try leaving for shorter periods of time.

Also, I would give them really concrete ideas on how to get her to sleep. Would they maybe be able to wear her? Do you have a yoga ball they could use? I would go ahead and use all the "bad habit" "crutch" type options that might possibly work with her. Go back to the 5Ss etc. I think sometimes tiny babies need a lot of extra help settling in when their routine is off.

Good luck! Remember this too shall pass!

We are in the same boat :( she won't tolerate being held by anyone but me and DH. She sees my in laws once a week, sometimes more, and she still acts that way. No advice :(

@VanillaBean: she sees my parents pretty often, every other week on average? And tonight they came here, so she was at our apartment with them. Maybe it will get easier...

@mrsbookworm: that's a good suggestion, we only were with them for about 20 minutes before we left today.

Is there any way they can come over for a few hours before you leave? This seemed to help my son. By the time I left, he was completely comfortable with my mom or DH's parents. We've had to do each time, though, so I'm hoping eventually he'll just be used to them...

I find that it takes a while for any baby to adjust and warm up to being around people (including love ones) and his/her environment.

I would suggest more frequent visits between your baby and parents/in-laws so that your lo will be more accustom to being with them and being in a different environment that they recognize.

Good luck!

To it was the fourth time my husband and I have left our 4.5 month old for a few hours. We always leave her with one of our parents. Tonight my mom and dad came over and we were gone for 4 hours. They got her to take maybe a 20 minute nap in the stroller, but she was pretty upset by the time we came home. Last time we left her with my inlaws (again for about 4 hours) she didn't sleep at all.
I am a SAHM and exclusively breast feed. I'm getting a little worried that she is going to keep freaking out anytime we leave her. It makes me feel bad for our parents who want to spend time with her, and bad for her because she is so worked up by the time we get home.
Today was the worst it's been, she was really worked up b y the ime we got back. Lately she has been crying even when others hold her.
I know a lot of this is normal development stuff, but is there anything I can do to help encourage her to be more comfortable when I leave her?
