@LindsayInNY: Like any sleeping situation you have to be comfortable with it. I know there are some private hospitals in Australia that use the Amby baby ones. I have heard great things about the hushamok ones, they have a more structured hammock mattress base compared to ours I think.
Our little one slept in it till about 3-4 months of age I think if memory serves me right and that is only cause he was too tall by then! I was worried about transitioning to a cot after but it went well.

@Mrs squirreld: They (MIL and SIL) were first looking at whatever brand is now banned in the US. They're now wanting the Hushamuk brand. I have no clue about any of this! How long did your LO sleep in it?

@LindsayInNY: We LOVED ours.... aww my bubba was so tiny in those photos above.. (he is now 15 months old! lol.)
He was a super easy newborn to settle and I thank the hammock for this... we will definitely be using it for baby #2 when he/she arrives in May. Let me know if you have any questions :-)

@ScarletBegonia: we do have the stand but our room is so so small :-(. I'm going to get the travel clip for it so we can take it anywhere. I've heard from others the hammock to cot transfer goes really well as they can self settle but I guess I won't know til I try! We'll keep him in there as long as possible! Definitely check out the Snuza monitor. It clips onto their nappy so it can be used in a hammock unlike the under mattress breathing sensors you get. We live in the Pilbara in WA! Congrats on the pregnancy! :-)

Oh wow thank you so much for the info Mrs Squirreld!! It is SOOOO pretty, I love it! I think the stand is so gorgeous as well, its almost like art!
Glad to hear that bubba loves it - i mean let's be honest, who doesn't love a hammock!? When I think about a little munchkin all suspended in there it just makes me happy! The breathing monitor is a great idea too, because i know I would be worried as well (but, as you say, I'd be worried in a bassinet, cot, co-sleeping, whatever!)
I think we might just go for it. My husband is all for it, as long as its safe. I guess the worry too is the hammock-to-cot transfer, but that's a bridge to be crossed when we come to it I guess!
Whereabouts are do you both live? I'm in Sydney. I'm due in March. Super excited!

I will also add. He stops crying the second we put him in swaddled and start "bouncing" it... Pretty amazing, especially if you feel like he's crying for no reason and can't get him to stop any other way! ;-)

@Penny Lane: hahaha. Put it this way, I wouldn't ask my husband to put up another hook! ;-) we have a suspended ceiling so no support beams to attach it directly to! So we had to put some in!! Urgh! But for most people it would be super easy, just find your support beams and drill it in (it comes with instructions) i think there is a YouTube clip too!

@ScarletBegonia: hi!!! Yay! Another Aussie! That last thread was mine and I can give you an opinion now that LO is here and been sleeping in it for the last 5 &1/2 weeks! :-)
We have the Miyo baby hammock. We have the stand too , but have a ceiling hook mounted in both our room and his nursery due to lack of space! We love it! I will admit I was a little concerned when we first bought our tiny little baby home about putting him in it.... But I was worried about him still breathing where ever he was!! (I think all first time mums feel this way no matter where they sleep!) We do have a breathing monitor though (Snuza Hero) for that extra peace of mind. Especially now that he's in his own room not ours! We do love it though! He seems to self settle in it quite well, as when he moves the hammock rocks. He always settles quickly too. I put him in still awake and a few bounces and then I leave him...and 90% of the time he'll fall asleep on his own. He's only waking up once a night now, not sure if we can attribute that to the hammock or not. Any questions- feel free to ask! :-) I'll add a picture of our setup. ;-) you can see we also have a video monitor attached so we can see him.

Hi - I found one thread about this with not very many replies from a year or so ago, so I thought i'd try again.

I am seriously considering going the baby hammock route for newborn sleeping. I live in Australia where they are not super popular, but I think maybe still more popular that in the US (?) - but in NZ across the pond they are all the rage, and a lot of companies over there produce some beautiful ones.

I'm almost 100% comfortable with the safety aspect - although there have been recalls the general consensus seems to be that if its properly set up the risk of SIDS or injury is no higher than in a bassinet/moses basket, and in fact could be slightly lower as the babys head is cradled up so less likelihood of choking on spit up. Many, many people in the interwebs swear by them and talk of blissful sleeps almost from the first day home from hospital, and amazing self-soothing abilities it gives babies.

So...did any of you use a hammock? Have you heard anything from people who have? We are getting a bassinet for free from friends so the cost isn't a huge issue - they are about $200 with a stand but since we aren't buying a bassinet I'm happy to spend the money - just wondering if its worth it! Advice/thoughts?
