We has an issue with where I work and feral cats having their babies there because they could get under the building. I was able to get one of the kittens myself, they were 6 or 7 weeks old. They were not happy that I was trying to scoop them up. Hissing and scratching. A coworker took it to the vet and they have had it as their pet for 3 years now. They rest of them we called a local cat rescue. They came out and caught all the feral cats, spayed/ neutered and then released them. The kittens they take and get them use to people and adopt them out.

we contemplated doing that, but the kittens and mother were already very feral (spitting, hissing etc) so we thought the best course was to call the ranger.

with our pet cat - she was a stray that hubby found when he was out on a job (he's a tradesman). she was about 9 months old, and casually walked into his van and was very friendly. he took her to the vet, had her checked over by our vet, vaccinated, desexed and we kept her. 4 years later she is still with us, and I credit her for chasing off any rogue cats that come to fight in our yard.

My husband was talking about sterilizing the kittens as well as the mother of we can catch her. And that's a great idea to make our porch a little less friendly to birthing cats.

This has happened to us before - our yard seems to be some sort of cat battlefield/birthing ground. We called our local council ranger to come and collect them, and they caught the mother too. Its unfortunate that they do get put down, but I can't have cats birthing under my house all the time :( we blocked off the missing brick in the side of the house that they were getting in from, and it hasn't happened since.

I do feel bad about them going to the pound, but I make up for it by having a rescue cat :(

Yesterday my DH found three baby kittens under our front porch. We think they are about three weeks old. They are tucked under there very well. We would have to remove lattice or boards to get to them. We think the mother is around, but we have yet to see her. We put out food, water, and sprinkled flour around the places she's likely entering the porch to see if she leaves footprints. The kittens appear well fed and have been moving around. If we don't see signs of the mother cat my husband is thinking of rescuing them tomorrow. (He is a cat person.) If we do, he wants to keep them down there for another week or two then bring them in. I'm a little apprehensive about separating young kittens from their mother, but I also don't want them to die down there.

Anyone have any experience taking in or rescuing feral cats? How long would you wait to get them out?
